Yes
Was a member of a car forum some 3 years ago now, and left it because of bickering and elitism, went back last week to have a browse and guess what, still the same and bickering about the same thing, the same guy,:gag:

Glad i moved on.

yep, i drifted from the grassrootsx forum (music photography) because it was getting very elitist with the pro photographers slagging off the amateurs, hobbyists and new to the gamers because they would happily go out and shoot local bands for free at gigs........ seemed to me like they had completely lost touch with the fact that people need to start somewhere!

Yup left a Satellite TV forum that I had been a Mod on for years. Got fed up of a small group of Mods and one of the Admin hunting like a pack of wolves for someone to have a pop at.
They started to bait other mods into arguments on the board and in the mods room.

I'd been on the site since it started in about 1998 as a basic proboard.

It's still there and I occasional have a look on an account they don't know exists.

I have a couple of minor gripes on the sites I still visit but nothing like that site.

Sad because it got one of the top 10 site hits on the web.

Now it's a tiny subsite and dead on it's feet.

I don't think I've ever left directly due to bickering... but there's 1 or 2 I only bother with occassionally due to it, I have nothing against a good discussion, but there's a limit.

Yes!
I left an R/C forum because the jumped up little bar stewards on it were always very negative and thought they knew everything.
One example was a thread about the cost royal mail can sometimes charge you when importing parts from the USA. I said if you don't want to incur the charge then don't buy from the states - simple! The response i got was to shut up, every post thereafter thought that was funny. I didn't bother telling the mods as they are in the same cleeky group.
Hell one of the mods thought it was acceptable in one thread to state that he drives his car over the speed limit everytime and thought it wss gunny the day he crashed it into a field!
That is why my avatar is Calvin peeing on negative attitude, because i just can't stand it.
I pop into the forum now to observ now and again but its still the same old she ite.

I got myself banned from Avforums because of the little prick of a mod (who shall remain nameless).

He's got himself a right little attitude, and thinks he is David Cameron, rather than some geeky little nerd with nothing better to do with his time than to sit there 'telling people off' for breaking the rules :cuckoo:

Incidentally, I assumed that naughty word I used above would have been filtered out :D

Soz if I offended anyone with it :p

Yes, I have. I was a member of a forum for the island I was to go to in the Maldives for my honeymoon. It was amazing the bickering that went on there. It was starting to make me dread going if that was the type of people that were going to be there.

Most of the arguments were started by people who hadn't been to the island for several years and were taking offence to someone asking what the dress code was for dinner. To be fair, on that forum, there's really only so much you can discuss about a small holiday island so there's going to be a fair bit of duplication. It got so bad that the forum became totally moderated by island staff, you couldn't leave a comment without it having to go to the manager to be authorised.

banned from avforums, id like to think it was for the hddvd/BD arguments, but it wasnt, it was for something that was nothing to do with me. thanks Stuart.

 urrr make up your mind ;)

I got it Tom :)

Being banned isnt exactly leaving is it.. I left the accy stanley fans forum because its all doom and gloom and fans arguing wiht each other ..

I left photography-forum.org because the people on there were totally intollerant of the newbies and people that weren't experienced photographers. There was so much bickering and slagging people off that I walked away and have never been back.

It's the best thing I ever did because it was leaving there that caused me to find this place. Tere may be some minor bickering goes on in here and there are a few (very few) members that I have issues with but I can't see myself walking away from here. TP is my home from home!!

I left airliners.net, I was a member for 5 years I think.

I used to be a member mainly for the F1 threads, and I got sick of a certain member who thought she knew *everything* about F1 simply because she lives in Monaco.. oh and if you tried to argue with her, her counter-argument was "Well I see more Ferrari's a day than you do in a lifetime" - big f'ing woop.

I still browse, but the site simply isn't worth paying to be a member of anymore.

Regards,

James

Yes left the Rotty site been back for a look a couple of times same rows over the same things by the same people mainly calling others for breeding dogs they called them back yard breeders but to me they were no better or no worse than the so called kennel club members who breed there dogs with each other so just left
Bob

Yes, the first one was a bridal forum and the second one was a card making one...... lots of women in one place, never a good mix :lol:

No. But I've seen sites spoiled because of it to the point that everyone drifts away.

I got banned from AVforum as well

but i have left a few because they did exactly what everyone here is saying no negs here, i like a laugh but not at others expense, that's why i like this forum, most of us tog for a hobby/passtime and encourage those who take it further i am glad i am back and now i am posting enjoy it even more.

thanks Merc.

Its not me he's referring to by the way

yeah the other stuart

No. But I've seen sites spoiled because of it to the point that everyone drifts away.

I used to frequent a very popular cycling forum which got to the same point. Became too elitist, basically a number of mods using the "it didn't cost as much as mine so can't be any good" argument and then being over handed on the sales boards. Pulling adverts for missing one of a possible 99 points, yes adverts by mods and admin may have be missing all criteria but are retained. Anyone who disagreed was banned.

I still go on occasionally to browse, and its still the same.

I must admit, I think TP is the first forum I've come across that does not have the same level of bickering and ego hungry mods that other forums have. On the whole its a pretty relaxed place to be, rules are sensible and staff and members are normally reasonable. There is always a few exceptions, but they're easily avoided/ignored. :D

And I left it because of very inconsistent moderation... No loss!

From my own experience as admin and moderator on various forums, bickering is a delicate balancing act - allow it and some people will get offended and leave, moderate too 'firmly' and they lose interest and leave... In fact whenever there's a row going on viewing figures go through the roof

Well, that is what a mods job is... but yes, I've been on many forums where mods think they are all high and mighty. Got threatened on one forum because the mod didn't agree with my solution to a problem someone had, and thought that he could threaten me with a ban unless I started waiting for him to suggest first :cuckoo:

Let's face it though, at the risk of upsetting folk here (not my intention) the motivations behind becoming a mod are questionable, I mean, who would spend their free, unpaid time essentially controlling people? It's a good outlet for someone who feels they need to be in control because of their own shortcomings, a bit like teachers who do it for the power trip. I'm always weary of someone who volunteers to be in a position of power. Of course, there are good mods and those who are called to mod duty rather than volunteering to it, and I'm not suggesting that all mods are on a power trip but I've come across a few bad apples...

Yep. Definately left a few cause of bickering.

One of the hardest things to do when you run a forum is to be fair keeping the forum going in the right direction and get what you want out of using the forum too. Admittedly the forum that I run pretty much runs itself most of the time, but when trolls start invading it can cause upset and chaos, because the people using the forum are usually quite fragile anyway.

police special :lol::lol:

I was a mod on a place called Toecutters Den, if you where into satellite TV and getting it for nowt you'd have heard of it.

I was made up to MOD because I'm level headed most of the time and like to be objective.

My belief was that you had to stay impartial and not let things get personal.

On that site it started to be a case of Mods getting personal and throwing their weight around. They snapped at everyone and started banning people left, right and centre.

What it did was drive the heart out of the site, people don't want to be treading on eggshells all the time they want to be having a little banter, a laugh and learn. In return giving the same back and helping people wherever possible.

TP along with just a few others I regularly visit gives that very enjoyment.

So keep up the hard work Mods and Admins :D

I moved away from another photgraphy site because the posts were getting silly, newbe bashing and established members throwing their weight around :(

In all my ten years of being an internet user where I've joined up a small number of forums, thankfully I've never found myself in a position where I was forced to leave a forum for one reason or another.
As well as being a member of this fine forum, I also frequent a meteorology forum and while I like to think I get on well with everyone in both forums, but in the weather one I have seen how people really does get riled up when it fails to snow or thunder! In the process things gets heated up (no pun intended) and people leave under a cloud (again, no pun intended).
I'm also addicted to a certain social network site, but it is that one that actually is producing the most problems for me as it's so full of depressing people and mad stalkers! Yet I still won't give it up.

i dont think anyone has mentioned digitalspy  , you dont have to leave , you get canned for no reason at all

Yes - both car forums.
UK Cougar Forum because one guy had an issue with me due to his small-penis syndrome (2litre, 4-cyl instead of 2.5 V6 - all 4-pot cougar-owners were very touchy about this, so it was just too much fun to miss pointing out whenever they claimed a 'victory' over a BMW M3 or something equally outrageous - invariably the BMW would turn out to have been parked in a lay-by or something...lol).
He then became a moderator and edited or deleted all my posts whenever he didn't like what i had to say.

International Mustang 'Bullitt' Owners Club because they're all retarded Americans, despite claiming to be 'international'...lol
I own one and love it dearly, but even I admit to there being far better cars out there - even a decent Mondeo is better built than my Mustang; and while it's fast and torquey (Grendel will confirm that while I can probably beat his M3 in a quarter-mile drag, he'll thereafter go past me like I'm in reverse), at anything over 120mph it rattles and shakes like it has palsy, courtesy of its East German tower-block aerodynamics...

Trying to explain to these idiots on the boards that a £15,000 muscle-car cannot hope to compete with a £50,000+ european sports car (or my current nemesis, the Audi S4 Avant combi-wagen) was like talking to mud.

Used to be a member of a certain forum on Ford cars but the owners got greedy I reckon.
Now you need to be a paid up member to post on their forum.

Yes. I left a Photography forum because an admin fella chose to have a witch hunt at the best wildlife photographer they had on it. She was a woman from Canada & he just kept on goading her till she left. I left in support of her.
