I'm on a bit of s road trip up to the west coast of Scotland this week on my motorbike, my mum lives up here so killing 2 birds with one stone, anyway going down a bit road just the north side of the fielder forest and hit a bit of diesel so ended up in a ditch, managed to snap the brake lever but thankfully that's the extent of damage to the bike, anyway it took 4 of us to get it out the ditch and I was back on my way...I was unhurt but when I was back on the bike my left leg was killing me, it's broken at the moment and this crash hasn't helped so I stopped off at moffat to get a drink to take my painkillers, when I'm having drink I put my camera bag down....yup I've forgotten to pick it back up and rode off, I've only realised 10 miles down the road so by the time I got back it was obviously gone...gutted is an understatement what a stupid thing to do, so it's goodbye 5D mk iii with my 70-200 on it and a sigma 50mm 1.4 in the bag too...I asked in some local shops but nobody has handed it in , reported it to the police too....I'm off to bed to make sure another calamitous event can't befall me

Blimey , Hopefully things will improve for you , Best bet is put up a Facebook post saying you lost it , It could work , I found a Canon camera a few years ago and posted that fact , Word spread and within a few days I was contacted , I asked what make and model the camera was to make sure it was the genuine owner and the person and camera was re united. Happy days , He was so great full .

I've had it posted in a local moffat community Facebook page by someone I spoke to, there was a garden centre opposite ro where I stopped that was open but closed when I returned so il phone them today too its worth a try

Hope you get a good result Dave.

Wowzers, not good.

Get it out on the socials about your gear. I got a camera that I found a few years ago back to its owner via FB. It can work both ways. Good luck. (y)

I've had ut put on their local community Facebook page, offered a reward too, reported it to the police last night, I'm still gutted now, my 2 favourite lenses I use back button focusing so the chances are who ever does pick it up and tries to use it normally will end up with unfocused shots and might just chuck it

Well some angels walk amongst us and a man called Iain from Queens park in Glasgow contacted me on messenger yesterday to say he had found something of mine, when I confirmed what it was we arranged for me to pick it up this morning, he had managed to get my name from the exif data on my cards and looked in Facebook, thankfully my profile pic is me on my bike and there was a picture of the same bike on the card , I'm so so lucky that It was found by someone so honest and thankfully he has a camera himself so knew about exif data...I'm very very grateful to him, it's restored my faith in humanity

That is just brilliant news!

As said above there are some decent people around.

Superb and oh so nice to hear that good honest folk exist and will, it seems, make an effort to reach out to the owner of the lost gear!

Don't forget to invite him to join TP ;)

Il try, I have a spine protector on and with my braces I felt like I was wearing my bag, I was about 10 miles away before I realised, I'm just very very lucky that It was found by an honest man who knew how to find my name
It gives me pause to wonder if, like with a suitcase, that you strongly attached a label inside the bag with truncated contact details i.e. not your postal address. Such as mobile phone number and perhaps email & IG name?

Yes, I'm going to put contact details on I'm also going to take a picture of my contact details and save it to my cards

I'm really pleased to hear your story Dave - honest people are very few and far between nowadays IME.

I always leave a business card in my camera bag and I also have a SmartTag hidden away in the lining. I also have one hidden in my car and on each of my keyrings - they work really well. If you use Apple products, they do a version too - although reviews say they're not quite as good.

I have my phone number on my memory cards, more likely to drop/mislay one of those but if there’s one in the camera, we’ll fingers crossed.

I thought about a smart tag, it wouldn't really work in this case as iain lived in a flat, so not close enough but it's something to consider

My bold. I had to resopnd to this. Stupid ? Absolutely not. If it helps here's my tale.

About four years ago I went to a local reed bed because there were reports of a pair of Penduline Tits or one male..I can't remember. A rare visitor to these shores. I met people who had travelled from afar after reading about them on forums and Twitcher groups. It had rained a lot so I was squelching through 1" of mud to get there but got my shots. I went back to my car.

There are playing fields there so the small parking area was for people making use of them plus a bit further on, a sports centre. I'd spent a few hours trying to get good shots so I was tired, boots covered in mud. I went to the back of the car put the heavy duty Manfrotto tripod 055 (£180) with a Jobu Junior Black Gimbal Head (£280) on, onto the ground but by the nearside wheel arch ..that's the side I approached from, whilst I got my car keys out of my pocket to unlock the car. So, now the tripod was out of sight. I put the lens into the boot was about to get my shoes out from the rear offside passenger side but was just too tired to change into them and as I have rubber mats on the floor of the car to protect the carpet I didn't do that. I drove away and when I got home and opened the boot..no tripod/Jobu. I went straight back but it was nowhere to be see so, back home I reported it to the police lost/found desk and enquired at the sports centre. They were never handed in. My insurance doesn't cover carelessness. There's a clause that states you have to take reasonable care of your property.
There was no point in beating myself up,I just ordered both of them from Wex. So,that was £460.

I have metioned it to people now and then and one chap, after commiserations, said he'd left an expensive camera on the roof of his car and drove off. He never recovered it. A US friend said he was photographing when he dropped his expensive camera and lens into the Pacific . Another had also lost a camera and lens to the ocean whilst hanging over the rail of a ship. Infact, just last September I had a lens hood on my Canon 100-400 photographing dolphins from a boat out of New Quay and when I swung the camera round it hit a vertical support rail and the lens hood fell into the Atlantic. It happens.
