Some years ago I purchased an original Safari Classic.
Whilst I thought it was good, I didnt think it was particularly suited to events for two reasons..
Firstly you couldn't use it whilst charging, which could be an issue at larger events.
Secondly, the modelling light wasnt great and where we had dark venues I'd really struggle to get a focus - I'd have to do it other ways.
But.. I did get a lot of good use out of it for non event shoots.
When the Li-on was released I got my hands on one, and as Garry will no doubt testify, I wouldn't give it back - I bought it.
I currently have 6 Elinchrom BXRi heads which I use for events. We're just coming into season for proms (first one next Friday) which is the busiest time of the year for us, and we'll be sending out 3 teams a night so our kit list is all required (and sometimes stretched).
The biggest issue for me at the moment is that I have light modifiers for both Elinchrom and Bowens fit.
Once the proms have finished I'll be selling my Elinchroms and replacing them with more Safari kits (and a couple of Lencarta Ultra's), and standardising on Lencarta (Bowens fit) light modifiers.
Negatives.. well you're limited to 5m cables, and if you do use the 5m extension you lose (I believe) 1/2 stop of power, which isnt a issue to me, but it might be to some.
The Li-on kit is a fair bit more expensive than two studio heads. But.. the flexibility is enormous - yesterday we shot bride and groom photos both in the communal areas of the hotel and in the middle of Richmond park.
Recycle rates arent as quick as studio heads. Again, that may matter to some, but not really to me.
That's my genuine assessment, though as many will probably already know, I do work with Lencarta at Focus doing light demonstration using shoestring backgrounds !
