... When you are covering a sports event, do you feel you have some kind of "right" to bag the "best" spots for photography? I ask because, I attend a few equestrian events just for the fun of it and often because I know people who are competing. It has been known for me to get tutted at and even shunted out of the way by the so called "pro" covering the event because I'm (apparently!) standing in "their" spot. The fact that they weren't actually standing there when I took up position seems to be irrelevant. I fully understand that they're there to earn a living and provide a service for the event organiser and competitors, but surely it's a matter of give and take. Any views?

i was asked if i was a pro at the local carnival as i had my BIG camera ;) the pro thought i might be "taking his buisness" i wish i was that good :)

Cant believe you started a thread on here crying about being tutted at .....

Well you asked for my view :)

Ive also experienced this, and coincidentaly, it was also at an equestrian event.

My Wife was competing at a show local to us and the arena was indoor, and badly lit. So, while my Wife was preparing to go in, with about 5 or 6 competitors to go before her, I headed into the arena to fine tune settings etc so that I could get as many good photos as possible of the Wife.

I was quite close to the official photographer, but still in the spectator area, and he threw me a couple of dirty looks before finally coming over to ask me "What the hell I thought I was doing". We had a conversation about me stealing his business etc etc, even though I explained (even though I didnt have to) what I was doing.

There are some very touchy pros out there!

You got tutted at as well ? :)

"What the hell I thought I was doing".

More fool him then.. thats totally the wrong approach.. totally the wrong way to go about things... personally i idle over and ask what the pictures are for.... I never argue wiht anyone about anyhting as thats not the way to get anything done.. IF I have an agreement to be the only photogrpaher and someone else is pushing in.. then the event organisors are the ones who should sort it out not the photogrpaher... If I dont have an agreement then I dont have any rights..

I could handle the 'tut', it was when he stole my milk money that I got upset :)

To balance this, I have also come across some official photographers that were extremely polite and they have approached me in the correct manner (as you have suggested), but no, he was a complete tool.

Touchy amateurs? Yes :D

Nope never, I normally have access all areas at the events I do so no need to vie with the public for the best spots, I can get where they can't
so why get upset over it

Badly lit, indoors seems quite common, but you have a Nikon you can cope :D

If you are in an area reserved for working accredited photographers then you should expect to be asked to move. If you are standing behind an area reserved for accredited media and your view is impaired because you chose to stand/sit there then you shouldn't be surprised. You should also expect for a photographer engaged by an event to want to do the best possible job for the organiser, sponsors, or attendees/competitors and that might mean asking you to defer if that position is the *only one* giving an acceptable view - irregardless of who got there first, the working pro might have had to be in other positions fulfilling commitments on the job prior to arriving at that spot.

None of that excuses rudeness unless you act like a k**b yourself in which case see the post immediately above......

For what it's worth, I'm a big girl and can (and have!) coped with far worse than being tutted at by some ill mannered jerk at a horse show! .... Or being the object of derision of a bloke on an Internet forum!!! I'm certainly not crying, I can assure you.

I just think that if I'm genuinely in someone's way, then a polite "excuse me" is generally enough to get me to move over. I've never, to my knowledge, seen an accredited area at an equestrian event. Generally, spectators just wander about or stand around a ring to watch the action. If you're calling yourself a professional, then behave professionally, that's all.

Not a touchy amateur, just someone who feels good manners actually matter.

I was replying with sports events generally in mind..... not speaking specifically about equestrian events.
