I'm very new to photography but just getting into, I'm going to a boxing/MMA event and am taking my canon 500d and brand new tamron 17-50 non vc, I'm after Getting done good pics and advice on settings etc as its the first event il be using both my camera and lens

Its difficult to tell you the settings as we dont know how light it is or what sort of venue.. is it in a sports hall or other? is it a big event? MMA usualy in a cage and boxing in a ring.. is it all in a boxing ring?

so general only.. don't use flash.. put your camera in manual ..You only have three settings to worry about....set your iso to the max..3200 and your aperture to max f2.8 and then set whatever shutter speed gives you a good exposure pointing at a fighter in the ring.. and leave at that..

Thank you for your help it's a cage fight all seated around the cage it's in a social club/pub I'm pretty sure I will use them settings hopefully my friend is not on first so I can practice before hand, thank you

You might find you need to go with manual focus if it's in a cage or the AF might settle on the cage instead. You'll get better shots if the fighters are further away from the cage as you'll get better separation. Keep the shutter speed up as best you can and hope to get a bit of practice before the fight you want to shoot.

I dont know where you shoot cage fighting from but really? How far are you away from the cage to need that? Plus as its going to be f2.8 you will need to follow the action.. how on earth can you keep up wiht it all manually? would be interested to see..

personaly I have always shot up against the cage and auto focus works perfect and there is no cage in the shot... but each to his own I guess :)

Thank you all my lens comes in the next 2datys I hate waiting for things so il have time to practice

I use flash for some fights but that's cheating :)
ramp up the iso to whatever you need to freeze the action
some lighting in these places is awful
these guys move pretty quickly.
focusing through a cage is difficult, are you close or not?
of you can go manual or centre focus point that might help

I'm hoping to get back into this in July in the north east as it's been a while since I've taken fight photos
the f2.8 might be good but I found mine to just miss the focus sometimes.

I have never shot any cage fighting as it happens, I have shot animals and birds in cages though and the first time I ever tried I got more cage than animal, so I've always shot manually since, without any problems. I just though the same principle MAY apply with a cage fight specially as I don't know how far away from the cage he's going to be and wanted to TRY and help out the OP.
