Event lighting

Hi all,

I'm photographing prom-goers in just over a week's time and trying to decide the lighting.

I will take a shot of the male and female seperately and a shot of them together.

I was planning half body shots against a white backdrop.

Would you recommend using two balanced softboxes or have one stronger than the other to avoid flat lighting?

unless it's a specific remit, don't bother with individual photos.

if it's a couple, the photos of the couples sell. Always sell to the girl, the guys don't care really. ANything else, and groups of friends is where it's at... 3 shots and maybe 2 of the inevitable 'fun one'.

I shoot event white seamless with one bigass (1.5m diameter) reflector umbrella as key, no fill needed, though I'll usually pop a small amount of on-axis fill from hotshoe flash.

Couldnt disagree more! Get each individual if you can Parents love these shots and will always buy them so think of websales. Kids may even have had instructions to have one done and given the cash to buy it.

Yes kids prefer shots with their mates and feel more comfortable with someone else. Be vary wary of the group shots and dont get suckered in for the one copy of a group of ten, they'll only scan it and proberbly tell you this to your face. Set a min of say group of six or more £5 per person and everyone gets a print.

Regarding lighting at events we usually set up flat lighting. That is both lights set even, this avoids the need to to keep re-adjusting all night.
