I'm posting this mainly for the benefit of those who will be going on holiday into Europe in the coming months, especially the busy summer period.

We are now in Tenerife. We arrived yesterday. At the Tenerife airport we were able to leave the plane ahead of most of the passengers as we had seats in row seven, infront of the wings and away from jet exhaust heat .We pay extra so I can get any decent shots, mainly of clouds but also to exit the plane quickly. Because we did that we arrived at the newly-installed biometric machines ahead of the crowd and no doubt, also of passengers from other flight arrivals. Those obliged to go through this system are non-EU citizens and, in addition,non-Schengen countries.

There were about 30 units set up to take eye scans and four similtaneous fingerprint scans. Only about five were showing a green light for use. Passports are to be placed on the scan plate and you have to look at a scan camera for a photo scan.. A series of questions had to be answered. Are you here as a tourist or business ? How long will your stay be ? Date you intend to leave ? Do you have accomodation booked ? Do you have enough money to cover your stay ? Do you have a credit card ?Do you have a return ticket ? My wife and I got through in about 20 minutes and there weren't that many people in the queue when we arrived at the scanners but when we turned away from them there were three solid lines of people..as most will know ..those roped-cordoned 'lanes'. Below our level..we were on the first fllor..were long lines of passengers who we assumed were departing and having to go through these scanners. We collected our luggage and went to the desk of the taxi company we'd booked through. A wonderful Mercedes took us to the hotel. It cost €83..a half hour journey. Before that I'd gone to the Tui tour reps to make sure we were off their passenger list for their coaches. The reason I mention this is because on past transfers we've had to sit on the coach for a long time..the longest wait was 50 minutes while they waited for Tui flights from eg..Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester etc. Then the bus calls at several hotels en-route to the one we were staying in.

With the delays re the scanners, goodness knows how long the wait would have been before departure. We weren't aware of the initiation of that system when we booked the taxi so it turned out to be an even better move. Another important advantage, at any time, was that we arrived at the hotel very quickly and were in our room within 15 minutes of arriving..not arriving with a crowd off the bus. We now book taxis each time but use the tour bus on the return so that we're 'covered' re the flght if there's a hold up en-route..eg an accident or very heavy traffic which wouldn't be the case going by taxi..ie privately..

There were such long delays at Geneva airport...the skiing season..that the system was abandoned and the old system of presenting a passport to a human being ...lol was reinstated. Infact,in Madeira in November we did go to a desk and present our passports and the Border officer..we now realise with hindsight..asked us the very same questions that were shown on the scanner machine. We'd never been asked those questions prior to that. Worse still, is that the. EU authorities concerned with this new system have stated that passengers arriving over the busy summer months are likely to face very long delays..quoted was 3-5 hours. They also said that individual airports can put the system on hold if they can't cope. At our scanners there were a couple of officers assisting people. I was surprised that after our scan and before we collected our suitcases we did have to go to a desk to show our passports. I told one of the officers assisting passengers that we had been through the scanners which, obviously, included our passports but she said we had to go to the passport-checking desk/kiosk...a bit unnecessary,I thought. It just took a few moments, though.

The hotel wi-fi drops out often so please bear with me if anyone responds and reasonably. expects a reply. 99% of the time I'll give a courtesy 'like' anyway if no reply is needed.

25C here each day. 30-35C on the balcony. The waves on the rocks are bit noisy,though..just like strong gusts of wind. Btw. We got 1.13 to the pound online delivered to the Tui travel agent in town..it was 1.12 there...but at Birmingham airport forex desk a shockingly-low 96 cents.Do the maths..lol....

Have a nice time in Tenerife , definitely picked a good time to go weather horrible here

yep did these recently on a hop back to the house in GC another gift from Brexit.

Had these in Gran Canaria, to be honest we were out in no time at all, picked up the rental car and got to the hotel 2 hours before the transfer coach arrived at 10pm, another reason why we never use the transfer.

Find Madeira customs usually pretty quick as less visitors and flights at one time, hoping it will be the same or at least working in April when we visit next. In regards to euros, we use our Virgin money debit card, as they don’t do foreign currency withdrawals from cash machines at done at that dat days bank rates, usually much better than any exchange place, it can be the same with a Santander dependent on destination.

Thankfully I don't do foreign holidays any more, but I was aware of these EU-entry shenanigans being on the way when I was working on the UK Schengen programme prior to Brexit.
Re Euros, I have a Starling current account which has the option of a free Euro current account on the side, same debit card, which is handy for me as I get a German state pension. I've not really looked at the exchange rate used to move money between currencies in the account, but it looks competitive as far as I can tell.

i use revolut to do the other way, the rate is pretty good for you at moment its about 1.15 euro to the pound

I have a Monzo card, which uses MasterCard exchange rate without fees.
The rate today is 1.145869 EUR

I flew to Prague as soon as the new process was implemented, as I am BA Bronze and able to chose my seat a week in advance, and was one of the first off the plane at the machines. Plane to baggage reclaim in 8 minutes. I had prebooked a taxi and I had to wait for him to take me to my hotel.

I think only the fact that the UK did not subscribe to the Schengen in the first place is why we see the queues, an example being that even before the new rules if I was flying to Munich I would be stuck for an hour, extending for much longer if flights arrived at the same time from Istanbul or Dubai...it's just one of those things I have to take into account when I go there, besides I usually hire a car to drive to the Alps and always get stuck on the Autobahn....

I voted to remain but I oppose the Schengen system. A criminals' charter. On the one hand it's great to drive in and out of countries without having to stop at border checks. I've never done it.,I assume the checkpoints are still there..ie the infrastructure, because EU law states that Schengen countries can suspend the 'drive thru's in the event of a national emergency or any such situation. I mean, surely, it must facilitate criminals moving undocumented/illegal migrants through. Europe. ?

We were in Puerto de Mogan, second time I've been,I love it there,we rented a car for the week, which strangely was cheaper than the coach transfer from the airport.

Sunday before last those machines were all in place at Tenerife South, but not ready for use.

In theory, the first time you go through it takes a long time while you are being set up on the system, but after that it should be quicker. We had hoped to get into the system at this point, but it seems that we'll have to wait for next time.

I hope you're right. This very minute, as I posted re the Canada shooting, my wife is telling me that, on Wednesday, at Tenerife South, it took a mother and her three children three hours to get through and the booked taxi had left. She wasn't given a refund.

I'm assuming we have to go through again on March 3rd when we leave. I need to read up on what happens when it's all up and running properly. I assume there will be lanes for those, like us, who have had the biometrics recorded and those who haven't. What happens when we leave ? I'm really asking myself that question....maybe you know.

You should leave as normal - as I understand it this is for entry into the Schengen area only. Britain will start their own version of the system possibly later this year, perhaps early next, for non-British travellers.

We considered doing a short trip to get the scanning sorted before our "proper" holiday in June but then realised that even if we were ready, the majority of others wouldn't be so the queues will still be lengthy... Hopefully, the fact that the airport in Heraklion is set to be moved in a few years doesn't mean an end to investment in the current facility so there will be enough terminals to deal with us reasonably quickly but we're not looking forward to the queues! Luckily, it's a 3 week stay so a few hours isn't too much of a chunk of holiday but it could still be a PITA.

TV channels behave differently because you're outside the UK, though if you have a VPN you might be able to set your location to the UK. Your hotel may block Google, though that would be unusual - have you tried google.com instead of .co.uk? An upside is that pictures on Imgur aren't blocked, so you can view images people from other countries post to non-UK forums.

I can get Google, most times until the gremlins get to work..lol. I read about VPN. I thought it was, for example, for people to circumnavigate the porn verification rules. When it was being discussed on,say, LBC Radio tech people said that's what to do as it hides your location and thus whether a person is subject to certain laws or not.

I have the Google icon on my Home page and in my Dock .I've just pressed it and the blue connect line zips along the top channel..then nothing. I see it is,infact Google .com.

I can't even Google to tell me what Imgur is. Sounds like a village in Norway...Lol.

Never mind, I'll plod on. It might work tomorrow. Thanks for the tips, though.

VPN is useful for appearing to be located in a particular place. It can work for porn sites. Imgur is an image hosting site that blocks viewers from the UK because it also hosts pornographic as well as other images (as does Flickr) and they decided they would simply block the UK from seeing anything. There's a site I'm part of where a lot of jokes are hosted on Imgur, but they're not visible to me except when I'm outside the UK.

We went through the scanning process when landing at Milan Malpensa a few weeks ago. There were about 20 machines in a side room and we were in and out in about 5 minutes. Then on to the e-passport gates where frustratingly, only 3 were working so that took about 30 minutes or more I think. There was no requirement to go through the e-visa process when we left.

Just back from Oslo - first trip to Schengen zone since they introduced biometrics.
Fingerprints, photo and what are you doing in Oslo. All over in a couple of minutes. Even quicker when we left

Earlier, my wife showed me an FB post/mobile phone video of Tenerife South airport arrivals area ,taken yesterday, and the place was heaving..long,long queues. Maybe UK half-term made it worse.

Same in Verona last week, doesn't need to be any faster as you will be waiting for your luggage still.

just flew out yesterday to the GC house for a few weeks, slick as a slick thing in Las Palmas, we have allready done the registration las time we flew so took about 1 minute and there was about 20 machines.
