Since I got my Dell all in one computer 3+ years ago I have ran an ethernet cable to it with no problem at all. It was a simple case of plug and play.

Last week I took out a new deal with BT internet. They sent out a new BTHUB 5 (even though I already have one). So this morning I thought I would just plug in the new one as the old one is 3 years old.
Now I know I can put the old one back and plug everything in as it was. But I really want to know why this new one isn't working.
I've called BT, they don't know (can't help). Reset everything. Turned off/on everything, but the problem remains.

With the new hub all wifi devices are working. The xbox is connected via a ethernet cable and that works. It's just my computer I'm having the problem with.

On windows 8.1.
Wifi works.
On Conection it says Ethernet limited and will not connect via the cable

Everything is exactly the same as it has been for the last 3 years (cables etc). So why now the problem?

Have you tried another Ethernet port on the hub?

Is the PC setup to get IP address via DHCP or has it been setup manually with a static IP. If manually, is the IP address in the correct range?

Make sure, latest drivers are available, for the ethernet controller.

I would start by checking the IP settings on the network card including DNS. You can check this using "ipconfig /all" at the command line, or looking at the ipv4 settings on the network card. Try and set the network card to use DHCP for both IP and DNS and see if that helps.

If the Card is set to get an IP address from DHCP you can try refreshing that by going to the command line and entering

ipconfig /release

and

ipconfig /flushdns

have you reset your PC?

Just looking about but I really don't know what I'm doing

I have to go out now but will reply to you all later. Thanks.

from what you have shown your network adapter isn't able to get an ip address from the router or the one it has is invalid.

boot it up and run the CMD command and then ipconfig /all and record the results
then do that on a working laptop and compare the results

Ok, I don't understand any of this. I can get by on a computer but I have no idea what any of the above means.

If anyone can explain what to do like you're taling to a 10 year old, great. If you can't be bothered I really understand :)

Wifi came up limited when I just turned the computer on. Now its normal again.

Okay. Go back to the screen that you displayed in your first post.

Now right click on the Ethernet adapter and click properties from the menu.

Now you should have the properties dialog box open and there will be a list of items. Choose internet Protocol version 4 TCP/IPv4 and click the properties button below the list.

Is the IP address and DNS set to obtain the IP address automatically or is there an IP address added manually?

If it’s added manually, click the obtain op address automatically for both and click OK. That should resolve the problem, but if not, restart the PC.

Well the IP Address looks good, but do the same to the DNS server. Change that to obtain automatically, or add an ip adress of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Was the top IP address set manually?

The ip address was on auto.

I have changed DNS server to obtain automatically.

Restarted.

Still the same

Okay, click start, run and type command, press enter. Or on windows 10 just type command in the search box and press enter.

At the command prompt, type ipconfig /all and press enter.

What do you get?

pm sent with all the top secret 007 stuff :)

Now that you’ve disabled WiFi, I can see the Ethernet info but it’s as if it’s not connected to anything and not getting an IP address from your router.

1. Are you sure it’s connected to an Ethernet port on the hub and not a Wan port?
2. Are you using the same cable that you use with the old hub?
3. Have you tried to connect it to a known working port on the hub ie. where the Xbox is currently connected.

If you are using the same cable as before, it may also be worth trying another. In theory if it works with the old hub it shouldn’t make a difference, but in my experience it’s worth trying just to eliminate it as a problem

I, yes
2, yes
3, yes, and I just mixed them all up again xbox (cable) BT TV (Cable) both work. It's just my computer. Perfect yesterday and the 3 years before. Plug everything into the new hub and my computer just will not pick up ethernet.

Just done a trouble shoot and it says... ethernet doesn't have a valid ip configuration

Did you try another cable?

I will have to buy another as its roughly 8m. All nicely tucked along the side of the room under the carpet.

Failing that, I’m lost.

You can try checking for updated drivers but if you plug in you old hub and everything works I really can’t see drivers or the cable being an issue.

What I thought. It was simple plug and play

Thank you for taken the time to help me (y)

I'm not very good with this sort of thing but we have had some problems at work since changing routers and it seems to be connected to the firewall on the pcs.

Do you use a firewall? If so maybe worth disabling it temporarily to see if that allows the pc to connect. Obviously not a permanent solution but could tell you if that's an issue.

I did turn off all firewalls but it didn't help. Going back to the old hub tomorrow. If it's still there I'll buy a new ethernet cable

Disconnect the Xbox and TV and connect the PC to the router

I think your PC is still trying to connect itself to the old router with the old IP. The new router has possibly assigned the old IP to the Xbox or TV.
Turn off PC and router, disconnect all cables from the router and wait a couple of minutes, connect the PC network cable to the router and switch on the router, them switch on the PC.
Report back.
I doubt if you need a new cable.
