I was out today taking a few photos, and I noticed that my camera seemed to be having difficulty focusing automatically. I tried to then take a photo and an error message saying: Error: Press shutter release button again" came up on the screen. Now, this has never happened to me before, so I did what it said and the sound of the shutter taking the picture sounded different, a bit slower, also, a couple of the pictures came out black even though the settings were correct. I thought it might have been a one off thing but the noise the shutter makes has stayed the same and the error message keeps coming back up. I tried changing the lens to see if that was the problem, but I still keep getting the same message :( Oh, by the way, the camera I have is a Nikon D40x.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can do???
 
Hmm, how many shots has the camera taken? sounds like the shutter is on it's way out.
 
The camera was second hand, and I reckon I have taken around 10,000 shots approx. Would replacing the shutter be easy to do and is it possible?
 
That shutter is rated to 50k shots which means you may be unlucky and have it fail early at 40k or you may be luck and it may live to 100k. Given it's history, sounds like yours is close to it's life end.

To be honest, a shutter replacement on a D40x wouldn't be economically viable :(
 
Oh damn :( I've tried cleaning the connection on the lens mount on advise, but that didnt work, I have also tried the simple things like removing the battery and that hasnt worked either :(

Roughly, how much would it cost to have the shutter replaced?
 
Buy a new one and stick this on ebay for spares. You'll probably get more than you think for it.
 
Have it checked professionally before putting it on the bay. :lol: It may be something simple after all ;)
 
Are cleaning the contacts and the connections the same thing? Not really certain I can afford a new camera at the mo, being at uni doesnt allow for extra money for things like this :( :(

I was going to phone up Nikon tomorrow and see what they say, can send it to them and have them look at it for around £5 and get an estimate for a repair. Does anyone know of any good repair shops in Norfolk if not?

I both agree and disagree at the same time.
If you stick it on ebay saying what has been said here, a lot of people will think, "oh its something simple, I can make a quick buck out of this" and the price will rocket to near enough the level of one with no issue.
If you list it saying the shutter is buggered, its been confirmed, then you wont get anywhere near the same price.

The OP could pick up another D40 for not much money, and sell the "broken" one for maybe half or more of the cost.
 
The shutter count is 18756, I have no idea what the life of a camera like mine is, so don't know if this is good or bad.

As I said before, I can't really afford to buy a new camera, even if it is secondhand :( The D40's are easy to come by, but when buying mine, it was much harder to find a D40x in good condition, so two to three years down the line I expect it to be much harder :(

Ok, was a bit of a gamble, I read someones review on flickr, they had the same problem, and how they resolved it was by banging the bottom of the camera with the bottom of their hand quite hard. Didnt have much to loose as it wasn't even taken pictures, just tried it and now its taking pictures with the shutter sounding faster than before, not as good as new, but much better. Could it just have been that it had got stuck or do you think it will go back to how it was not working?

Spoke too soon, error has come back again :(
 
Thats only about 30 miles away so will be easier for me to get to and hopefully cheaper, I'll give them a ring tomorrow to see what they say and can take it over for a estimate hopefully :) Thanks!
 
It will be going on ebay if its going to be too expensive to repair, just going to keep my fingers crossed! Don't know what I would do without my camera now :(
 
Ebay always seems to get the nutters who will buy a camera with any fault at close to the normal price. I saw a 7D with a completely annihilated USB connector go for close to £850 last year! Some people will take anything at a chance I guess. Surely sticking it on ebay and then buying another one privately (from a reputable seller) will be at least as cheap as the assessment fee from a service centre and then flogging it on?

If it needs a shutter I reckon you'll be looking at at least £150 to £200 to get it done professionally and it's not a diy job.......
