Was using my 40D fine last night via USB on the PC using EOS Utility, which worked fine. I believe I left the DSLR on overnight and now when I go to use it, it says Error 99. I've tried quite a lot of methods and still none work. It's second hand so probably no warranty or guarantee on it now :( Can anyone help me?

Thankyou.

Are you using a lens with an aperture ring? Sometimes if you knock tem out of place on newer cameras this sort of error comes up.

I got the dreaded ERR 99 on Sat whilst during a penalty shootout with my 20D behind the goal and using it remotely it decided enough was enough and the shutter now just fires away non stop itself.

Time to sell it for spares and look for a second body for me.

What is the problem you are having? Have you removed the internal battery?

From what I remember err 99 is an unspecified error - something has happened that the camera has no error code to cover.

I would initially take the battery and card out. Leave the battery out for 10 mins or so.

Pop them back in and see what happens. If it persists try a different card.

After that I run out ideas, but hope this helps.

I had err99 on my 40D not so long ago. It was the shutter so had it replaced. Whereabouts are you?

Wow! Quick replies, thanks! :D

I have a 18 to 15mm and 55-250mm IS lens so possibly aperture rings?
I have removed battery, CF Card, for about 20 minutes, put them all back in and still error 99. Basically when I press the shutter button it will open the shutter for x sexonds and then straight away on the screen the error 99 message is shown. And I live in Slough. It's a shame it's occured! :(

Hi Kelly - how much di the shutter replace cost? I've got the err99 problem and hae tried all the suggested fixes I can find to no avail.

Some one i know had a err99 on his camera after much messing about and buying a new camera it turned out to be the lens f***ing up.

clean lens contacts and try different lens with a full batterys out and recycele between trying different lenses. And try to get the lens tested on different cameras. also turn on the fire without memory card

Do you get the err99 when firing without a lens?

My 40D suffered the same a few months ago and ended up at Canon Elstree who did a terrific repair job with a very quick turnaround...replaced the entire shutter mechanism for £153 including a full service and 6 months warranty Full story (not that exciting :)) here

Thread contains some alternative repair shops if you go that route
