Error 99

Tonight my girlfriend was getting this on her 20D with Canon 100-300mm USM f/4.5-5.6 (not the IS version).

It appeared to manifest itself only when the aperture was set to 6.3 or higher, and did it on two different bodies (we changed bodies to eliminate the camera as the cause).

So, having identified the possible fault, does anybody know how much I'm looking at for a repair? I've contacted a couple of places for quotes (no replies yet) but if anybody can recommend a good place I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Craig

My guess is sticking aperture blades but I can't help you with how much it will cost to repair I'm afraid.

I use Fixation in London for my repairs and servicing and have used Lehmans in Stoke on Trent in the past. Both give good service.

I did yes, I know that Error 99 isn't specific to the problem I've described, but having tested it on two bodies and only getting the error when changing the aperture tells me it's time to get a professional to look at it.

If the quote is more that it's worth as Stroller suggests, I'll probably get a replacement. Has anybody used the Sigma 70-300mm APO f/4-5.6 version? How does that compare?

I use the Sigma 70-300 APO, only had it for a couple of weeks but I think its fantastic so far. Never used the Canon equivalent though so I cant comment on how they compare. Good luck with your repair though and hopefully you wont have to look for a new lens.
