Erratically firing SB-900s - Flashbender Issue

I'm usually armed with a D700 and a D300s.
I tend to equip each with an SB-900. I'll pop a flashbender rogue (large bounce card type thing) on the body I'm using as the main with just a smaller bounce card on the second.
I'm finding (increasingly often) that the flashbender means that the flash fires erratically when I'm carrying/handling the camera and on occasion, the camera will be locked so I can't shoot unless I turn the flash off.

My partner was given a new D3200 for Christmas. I lent her an SB-900 + flashbender and couldn't replicate this issue.

I suspect this is down to a short in the hot shoe which is caused by the extra stress of the Flashbender. (It's not particularly heavy but it does have sail like properties).
I'm going to try and clean all the contacts on the hotshoes/plates, but wondered if anyone else has had similar experiences when using flash guns on camera with large modifiers?

My current work around mean is using a flash bracket and connecting the flash via i-TTL camera. When I'm using the flash just for a little fill, it's OTT so I'd like to get this fixed.

I recently had problems with the flash firing erratically on my d700. It appears to be a fairly common problem if you Google.

Eventually it misfired all the time and nearly burnt the flash out...

I had to return it to Nikon for a hot shoe replacement at a cost of £170
