err 99

hi all, wonder if anyone can help a mate of mine has a canon 350d but he keeps getting "error 99" come up on the screen so he cant use the camera, has anyone got any ideas, :thinking: told him should have got [S1]nikon[/S1]
 
Error 99 is a generic error code. If you google, you'll find that for some people, taking the battery out and leaving it overnight may do the trick. If that doesn't work, then its probably dead and will need to go back to the pits for repair. Mine was showing error 99 and I couldn't shift it. Its currently here: http://www.camera-repair.co.uk/index.htm I can't vouch for them (as the camera isn't back yet), but they tell me the shutter is damaged and it will cost £150 odd for repair.
 
I get it occasionally. Cleaning the gold connectors between the lens and camera normally seems to stop it for me. I have never had it constantly though it always goes when I turn off and on again, just stays away longer when I clean the connectors it seems.

this does it for me too, a drop of cleaning fluid on a cloth works a treat.. even had it on a spanking new lens out of the box... Dave
 
ERR 99 is to do with the contacts controling aperture on lenses, more frequently occuring whilst using 3rd party lenses. Is your mate using a Sigma or similar (other than Canon) lens.

hi dino, no its a canon lens, thanks anyway everybodys been helpful ill show him these replies and see how he gets on :thumbs:

battery. Just take it out and put it back in ,, that will usually fix it, I used to get it a lot with one particular lens but it's not happened for a while now.
 
My mate had this with a Canon lens but it was an older lens, he could take one shot then would get the error. binned the lens and got a 70-300IS and all is well, all his other lenses worked except that really old one.

i've had this happen to one of my lenses - turned out to be an electrical failure, so i had it fixed and it's ok now

it must look like i treat my gear like a football :lol:
 
It's happened just twice on my 20d in the last 18 months with 2 different lenses on and simmply removing the battery and putting it back in sorted it..except it would only go if I put in the Canon battery, if I popped the Hahnel back in it would appear to be completely dead. Once I'd put the Canon one in though and switched it on and then off again I could put the Hahnel back in and everything would be fine :shrug:
