Hi everyone,

Has anyone had any error messages on their 5D MK3?

I was shooting at the Peterborough Dragonboat Racing last weekend and it started to give me the "Err 30" message (Shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off and on again or re-install the battery).

So, I switched it off and on again but got the same problem, took the battery grip off, removed the batteries and put them back in, put the grip back on, tried again - same message.

So then I took the memory card out and replaced it and it seemed to work fine.

I've just tried to use the camera again now and now i'm persistently getting the same message :'(

The camera was bought in December 2012 at WEX Photographic - so not an import - i've just tried calling them, but of course the Sales Team don't work on Saturdays.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem that might be easily overcome? Or is it going to be a repair job?

Forgot to mention, the batteries are genuine Canon, as is the battery grip and all lenses are Canon too.

Have you tried the batteries in the camera, without grip?

Good question.....no I haven't - will do that now...

Ahhhhh, that's interesting - tried one battery in the camera and it errored, tried the other and fired half a dozen shots in quick succession with no problem.

Hmmm, but now i've put the other battery back in and that fired off another half dozen shots - so now I am confused lol

I'm sure WEX will see this sorted fast for you  no ideas I'm afraid though on the error

Yeah, i've always had great service from them before - both online and visiting the store - so I have no doubts that they'll do what they can for me.

I'm going to Scotland in July, so would be really gutted if it doesn't work while i'm up there.

I'll give WEX a call on Monday morning to see what they can do for me

have you tried a different memory card ?
with you saying you re inserted the memory card and it worked fine it might be that

edit...
after having a quick read about the error 30 problem some are saying it's a shutter fault others blame the memory card
trying a different card would definitely be the first thing to try

Yes i've tried 2 other memory cards and the same thing happened.

I've also tried my other lenses as well, just to be sure that it's not the lens causing a problem.

Funny thing is now it seems to be working ok again - but i'm still going to give them a call on Monday morning.

(*4) Shooting is not possible due to an error. Turn the camera off and on again or re-install the battery. -Turn the power switch to <ON> to turn on the power again.
-Remove and re-install the battery.
-Use a Canon lens.
-If the instructions above do not solve the problem, please contact your nearest Canon Service Center. (*1)

Canon's site also states

Err 30 "Malfunctions related to the shutter have been detected."

Sounds like it may need looking at / a repair...Is it under warranty ?

I had this error on my 7D, googling suggests that it's a shutter issue but mine stopped doing it after I updated the firmware (coincidence?), the problem reoccurred about 10,000 shots later then a further 5000 later I got the same error immediately followed by an Error 40 and now it's completely dead.

Hi all - many thanks for your input on this

I have been in touch with WEX today, the chap that I spoke to was extremely helpful and has arranged for a courier to collect it sometime tomorrow.

He said that it will be going back to Canon for a repair and service, and could take up to 3 weeks - I should be going to Scotland in the middle of July and i'm really keeping my fingers crossed that I get the camera back by then.

As I couldn't get hold of WEX at the weekend, I found a website for a camera repair specialist and gave them all the details of the error and they came back with this message:

"Error 30 does tend to relate to a shutter malfunction, however the error code is only a general fault code. Unfortunately we are not at present repairing the 5DMKIII until we have full training on this model, therefore Canon are repairing this model in house."

So, i'm now hoping that my camera comes back in time for my excursion.

I'll keep you all updated.

That's good news and I suppose one of the big advantages of buying UK stock over an import ...

Hope it's back for your holiday and sorted out.

Absolutely, I can understand why people would buy an import, but i'd rather pay extra for complete piece of mind - but that's just me.

Just to keep everyone updated with this progress.......

I've just had an e-mail from WEX to say that my camera is ready to be dispatched to me as it's now been repaired :D

I've quickly phoned them up to ask if it can be delivered tomorrow as i'm going away on Thursday, so now i'm keeping my fingers crossed - i've got my 7D to fall back on, but obviously would love to take the 5D3 with me if at all possible.

Here's hoping.....I can't find an emote with crossed fingers or i'd use it lol

Did they say what the problem was / what has been repaired ?

Glad you've got it sorted

No, they didn't say anything on the phone about it, the e-mail said that the camera has been repaired though.

I'm assuming there will be some sort of report from Canon to say what the problem was though - i'll update this thread with all the details as it might come in handy for someone else at some point.

Thanks :)

Doubt it!

Oh really? I've not had to send a camera off for repair before, so don't know.

I just assumed (I know you shouldn't assume anything) that it would come back with some sort of report to say what they've done with it.

Hopefully you'll find out for sure tomorrow when it gets delivered. :)

It's back :D

In the nick of time too, now starting to re-pack my camera bag so it's ready for tomorrow morning.

So, there was a "Pre-Invoice" in the box too....

Accessory - Box / Eye Cup / Battery Cap / No Battery / No Card
Comments - Dismantled, cleaned, reset connectors and tested
Cleaning: Contacts 1,000 (qty), 0.00 (Price/Qu), £56.69 (Net Amount)
Warranty Repair: £56.69-
Dispatch costs: £5.00
Dispatch costs goodwill: £5.00-

So, this service including postage would have been £61.69p

I won't get chance to test it now until I get to Scotland tomorrow, but have to say a big thanks to WEX (will be giving them some feedback also), could not fault their service at all (i've never had a problem with them before and didn't expect any this time either).

When i used Canons i got this ussue on several bodies, easy solution for a temporary fix was to use a pencil rubber across all contacts including the battery contacts to clean them and then rub pencil graphite over all contacts
