Yes
After much deliberation and s***ting myself I've just placed an order for a mint and boxed leica m4.
It arrives tomorrow Yey!
The deliberation was mainly whether to go for an m4 or a mint M6 that was also for sale. In the end I decided I wanted to go with an old school fully mechanical meter less camera so the m4 won out.
I'm just wondering if there are any other m4 users on here and any recommendations for 50mm glass?

I've got M4-p. The only 50mm I own is a 1999 Elmar M 2.8. It's a great lens. I find 2.8 plenty fast enough.

Delta 3200, bit grainy. Shot wide open.

That's a beautiful picture right there! I'll check out the elmar

Nice one! Congratulations. :)

The Elmar is good. Pretty compact too. I had the Zeiss Planar for a little while and sold it to Adam on here. Great lens and very sharp, almost 3D rendering. I'd have kept it but ended up getting a Summicron v4.

I'd also consider the Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.5 ASPH. That's very highly regarded, and fast too.

I have an M4 too.

Can't go wrong with any of Leica's Summicrons. I use a V2 Rigid myself since I like the medium contrast/high resolution, the later Summicrons are a bit more contrasty and can focus down to 0.7m. I also used the Voigtlander 50mm 1.5 ASPH for a while (the screw mount version) and I liked it.

Ha 'gateway drug' I like that!!! I'm keeping the voigtlander setup as I do really like the camera and lenses but I don't know if it's cause I'm turning 40 next but I kind of fancied something old school mechanical and solidly built that will hopefully last a lifetime!
Thanks for the lens recommendations chaps I'll have to do some research!!

Well that didn't last long!
It arrived this afternoon and was far from mint! Piece of vulcanite missing in the corner and marks all over. To get me wrong it's probably a good clean example just not what was advertised and not what I payed £900 for so it's going back in the morning.:(

Ouch! May I ask where you ordered it from? Ffordes and Aperture London are always worth a look. They aren't overly priced either.

It was from a place called the classic camera in london. Website said mint. Email said mint sadly camera said otherwise!

M W Classic? I have used them and had good experiences. I've only ever ordered lenses and small accessories however. Gutted that it wasn't what you expected. Don't be put off though. For £900 you could get an M6 I reckon, if you wanted a meter.

Sorry to see you got shafted. Perhaps handle before purchase in future. I used an M3 twin stroke with and f2.8 Elmar for years and that WAS mint - and still is (in a box somewhere)....

I love the M3. In my opinion, the M2 and M3 are probably the best mechanical Leicas you can get - ignoring the new MA and MP.
The winder is like a knife through butter. Very smooth!

No it wasn't mw classic just to prevent any confusion its a place called 'the classic camera'
Unfortunately try before I buy isn't an option where I live as no dealers nearby

It'd be awesome if you take it out, use it, get some rubbing on it, basically give it some life. Only you can decide if it's worth paying that much for a limited edition that, on the surface at least, is only different to a standard model due to some engraving and a presentation box.

This ^^^ Did spot that on their site the other day and it caught my eye.

I see what your saying chaps. And to be honest I'm p***ing in the wind really.
My initial idea was to get something in mint condition, use it but still look after it and then further die the line it may have appreciated in value and pass it down to the kids.
Well that was my idea anyway???

I'm with them ^.

If you want to buy a camera to use, paying £1400 instead of the £900 you paid for the other M4 seems like a waste of money you could put towards another lens?

It's obviously your money though :0)

Your all gonna think I'm mental but I've been looking at this quite seriously

Well, I'm the sort of guy that would buy that. I'd like the idea of being the one to bring it to life. I know I'd use it and cherish it.
You're not alone. Sometimes it's more than a purely financial decision.

Although I prefer the Chrome M4-p anniversary. Check out this listing on eBay 351752600854

Get an M6 or even an M7 for that kind of money. If you're patient you could even get a nice M4-P and drop the rest on a 50mm Summilux.

I bought a lens from classic camera - was in great nick but was very stiff to focus - needed to get a really good grip, they did refund but pretty poor then sent it out like that.

Never liked the look of the 4 - Had a couple of M2s and they were lovely, the last one I sold was in amazing condition but prefer the convenience of the M6

I know what your saying chaps it is strong money for what it is. I've seen a mint and boxed m7 that I could get but I have concerns about future repairability on that as it's fully electronically controlled. Hmmmm.

Born in 1977? That's the year the M4-2 launched. There's a website kicking round that lists which serial numbers were produced in which year...

Nice. I've got a few, but of the "newer sort" namely the V lux 30, V lux one and excellent X1

Born in 76 so I'm a year older than the m4-2 ha!
I've read some good reports on the newer digital leicas, must admit though I'm going old school with this purchase

LOL! I was just coming to the end of the thread and about to suggest you get an M6 TTL. You might find the meter useful at some point. I used to shoot one and they're lovely cameras. If you can find a silver one you might want to consider it. You seem to think along similar lines to me. I like to look after my kit and always buy mint examples because, quite simply, I then know the thing has never been abused, so I have the right camera for me to look after and enjoy. The problem with Titanium is it tends to be a real scratch magnet. I've had watches made from ti and they would scratch just from touching the desk! For that reason, if I was about to do what you are, I'd look for a silver version. It will help you not only look after the camera but also your mental health. :D

That's it! Exactly my plan!!!
My thinking like yours is try to buy mint or as close as and look after it! I spoke to aperture and the reason it's mint- is where the straps rubbed against the leather it's darkened it slightly. The metal works as new apparently!
Hopefully it'll fit the bill! It was either this or a mint boxed as new m7. But tbh the repair bills if anything electronic goes in the m7 scare the bejeezus outa me!!!

Yes, that's exactly why happens to Ti. It doesn't exactly scratch, it marks. Whichever metal you choose to go for, be sure to finish it off and protect it with a Luigi half case. Ignore his mickey mouse website, it's been the same since the 80s and he'll likely never change it. His cases are, however, the best in the business. I've used them on all my camera for the last 25 years and they've all been superb, especially the one I had on my M6 TTL! Here's a link:

He also sells them on eBay.com (US site) under the ID "LeicaTime", if I remember right. He's in Italy, ships via Fedex so if you order one that's not bespoke it'll arrive within the week.

Aww mate I've got a luigi strap on my xe2 and bessa r4m, beautiful beautiful products! I'd love one of his cases! Well have to what's left in the pot at the end!

It's on hold for me at the moment but I think it will be tomorrow. I'm just waiting on the refund on the m4 to clear. Aperture are sending me another couple of pics, there salesman tells me there's only a few slight marks on the leather, the main body's clean. I think it's gonna be the cleanest m6 ttl I'm going to find.

Good to hear. Hope it goes your way.
