Erasing behind trees in GIMP ?

I'm trying to merge the lake with the dark sky from another exposure but i'm having much trouble getting between the branches, i'm was wondering if there's a less time consuming way to do this without leaving an edge.
I suppose i should have used an 0.6 Grad

You could try using the scissors tool or the Foreground select tool (similar to the old SIOX plugin: http://www.siox.org/ ). Hint: read what it says in the status bar when using the Foreground select tool.

Don’t know about gimp but in Photoshop you can do this with blend tools i.e. blend if but as I not know gimp can’t help
Only other thing is to make your selection and feather it to soften the edge

I almost forgot: if the area you want to select if of similar colours, then you can use the Fuzzy Select Tool with Treshold adjusted as you need it.
