What, in your view would be the equivalent Canon Lens to the Nikon 18-70 DX for IQ etc?

Would it be the 15-85?

Can anyone answer this as i am now seriously considering selling the Nikon D90 and lenses for a Canon xxxD model as the weight of the Nikon and 18-70 etc is really causing problems for my wrists (Arthritis)

The standard Canon kit lens is the 18-55. There is a more expensive 17-85mm too and plenty of other options if you do a very quick google ;)

I should add, the IS version of the 18-55 is better than the non-is version. Not sure about the newest versions (is II and non-is III). Neither are stellar though, but they are light.

I don't know much about the Nikon one but theres a sigma 17-70 and canon 18-135 canon 17-85 that would most likely be the equivalent lens to ur Nikon. IQ wise the 15-85 is far superior than the lenses I have mentioned above and most likely including ur Nikon as the IQ of the 15-85 is often compared to the canon 24-105 F/4L is usm and more often than not the 15-85 is chosen over the 24-105 as it has a much preferable focal length, better IS and better control of CA. I went for the Canon 15-85 IS USM and Canon 550D good luck

Yea, increasingly annoyed with problems i am having with weight due to health issue. Really love the setup i have at the mo too.

This may not be what you want to hear but I can't really see a shift to a Canon SLR helping you out much. Neither the D90 nor 18-70 are particularly heavy so I can't see you making big weight savings by switching to another DSLR. How about looking at a CSC of some description?

Go Micro 4/3rds. The weight difference is astronomical and if you go with the OM-D E-M5 the performance and IQ is better than anything short of the new 650D in my opinion.

Arent the xxxD models lighter? They seem as though they are.

Checked online and the 550D is quite a bit lighter than the D90.

One thing is i cant stand is holding up a camera to look through the LCD. It feels wrong and in bright light a real pain.

Plus, those with an EVF, i just cant stand EVF's! Much prefer an OVF.

Yes, a xxxD will be around 2/3rds the weight of the D90 (I think I made that point in your original post). A 500D/550D and kit lens will weight around the weight of the D90 body.

500 or 550D would be my choice. Going to hold off as will have a play with D90 the weekend and see what it is like for a weekends use first

I wouldn't do such a change and I'd instead buy a wrist support from any good pharmacy to brace the weight of the camera against against your forearm, supporting your wrist.

Didnt think i would have a problem to be honest.

Would it be a step backwards if i went 500D/550D? They are much lighter as i tried a couple this morning in local camera shop to see what they were like.

I would say not, IMO, they are both newer cameras and other than this mythical "handling" advantage of the larger cameras (which equates to weight and bulk) the D90 doesnt offer much more, and the 15MP and 18MP Canon sensors are excellent.

I have had/used up to the D80 in the Nikon lineup (D40, D50, D70, D80) and had/used most of the xxD Canon models (owned from D30 to the 40D and used a 50D for a few months).

I bought the 500D as a stopgap after selling all my m4/3rds gear and TBH, its the happiest I have been with a body. It gives me excellent IQ in a body I can carry all day if I want to. I can say I have yet to find a negative with the 500D. I find the handling better than any of the xxD models as instead of a single use wheel the same space offers multiple options through the buttons and the quick set option makes changing options so easy.

Thanks. Most people say nay to xxxD and yay to xxD of which are way to heavy for me!

I do love the IQ of the D90 and the buttons etc. Pity the weight is an issue.

I would have to sell the D90 and my 2 lenses, 50mm and 18-70.

I would be looking at the 500D i guess and maybe a 50mm for now. Will see over the weekend when i have used the D90 a bit more.

Eeer No... There's more tech crammed in the 550D but it is swings and round abouts.

I don't wish to be at all patronizing but if you join up here they have a members section about camera adaptions for disabled people.

One is apparently a chest pod.

Also would a monopod assist you in taking any weight of your hands?

If you go for a 500D, buy with the kit lens if you can. It doesn't add a great deal to the price and while it is small and light it offers good optical quality.

500D + kit is a really nice carry camera if you want a lightweight solution.

I find the xxxd models much fiddler to use, so am in total disagreement with Dave. I find the xxd and xd control wheel essential for quick operation. That said, the 500d is ok. Very plasticky, but with a good LCD screen. Nice and light which i guess fits the criteria.

Perhaps on the older xxxD models some things needed menu delving for setting, on the newer ones this isn't an issue. Press "set" and the 4 way switch and almost all settings are instantly available. Shutter and aperture, iso, exposure mode, exposure compensation, flash compensation, picture styles, white balance, metering mode, pic quality, AF mode and drive mode can all be set one handed (actually with one thumb), using dedicated buttons and the same thumb, there are also direct controls for AE lock, focus point, spot focus and live view.

What other settings (using only one thumb) would you need/use on a camera while out shooting?

With its size and weight, and easy changing settings its ease of use one handed is better than any other camera I've seen or used

Tried a 500D yesterday and have to say it is much lighter and i know it is plasticy but the buttons seem fine to me and the layout.

Weight wise it was, to me, a lot lighter than the D90 with the 18-70 on it. I tried the 500D with a Canon 15-85 and that is a heavy lens!!

As i said before, i am going to try out the Nikon over this weekend first before throwing in the towel.
