So, just imagine you're thinking of getting a new bit of kit made by a brand with which you are unfamiliar, such as a Fuji camera, when you've been a Canon addict for years, for example. You go online and look for a review of your chosen bit of kit ... And find loads of opinions both written and videos, telling it like it is about your preferred choice, comparing it to others, trying it out in different settings and for different purposes. And you end up listening to lots of supposed "experts" giving you their views and start to wonder if you're going nuts for ever even thinking about buying a ((??)) brand item.

So ... Who do you believe? Whose opinion do you respect and take account of? Who do you refer to to help you make an informed decision, given the price of some of this kit makes it a potentially expensive mistake?

Does anyone have a favourite reviewer whose opinions they hold to be reliable above all others?
 
ephotozine, dxomark are two that give technical analysis. In my experience though the products are often better in practice than they report. However they will give some information on which to ask questions of people on TP who already have the equipment. See what they say and have a look at their flickr/gallery.

I understand your issue but at the end of the day one man's Nikon is another man's Canon.
 
I tend to like the reviewers who are not afraid to express an opinion. Many people seem to be afraid too so I quite like opinions and even the odd rant too as you can't really tell all that much from images on line.
 
I thought the voice to take seriously about reviews was "Ken Rockwell". :D

I visit Thom Hogan's sites. He is I think mainly a Nikon and M4/3s shooter but writes excellent reviews and provides some very thoughtful analysis on the state of the market. He's certainly not afraid to call a spade a spade and has been rightly quite vocal about what he feels about Nikon, the direction of the Company in terms of new products and the rather poor PR responses to such as the D600 shutter debacle. Yes, but i complains regularly about the UI on cameras and his sans-mirror web site is designed by cavemen! I do agree he is a good read though, but a little clueless about his own skills on UI.
