Hi all, can anyone tell me if your house I durance covers your equipment when in a car boot? Or do I/ we need to take out a special cover for the equipment?
Any help would be welcome, I travel a lot with work and would like to take my camera out a lot more??

Need to check your policy or call your insurer, it could be different from insurer to insurer.

Think it might be covered, but I also think you need to inform Insurance and itemise all you have got, and poss prove it it too?

Depends on what cover you have with your house insurance. To be 100% give your insurance company a ring and ask them ...

The stand house insurance policy didn't properly cover my gear, especially with excesses and maximum individual item values. I had to itemise my equipment to the insurer and pay extra to get my gear properly fully covered.

If it is covered, it will be under the 'All Risks' section - which varies considerably according to your insurance company.

Things to watch out for are individual item limits, total 'collection' limits (IE They consider the total value of all your camera gear, and put a limit on what they will pay in total), and named items (IE If items are over a certain value you need to itemise them in advance to the company).

They may also stipulate thing like a locked boot, not in view, etc - if you've got a small hatchback with a removable rear parcel shelf this may not be considered 'secure', for example, so could have additional restriction on cover.

Read your policy (dull, I know, but better than finding you're not covered when it's too late!), then read it again to figure out what it actually means!

I got insurance for kit it was covered for in the boot a few years ago, by boot the insurance meant boot, was no good in a hatchback or a boot that you could get access by way of the back seats ! So best check the small print to see what they mean by boot.

As you point out Chris, some insurers don't cover boots than can be accessed from inside the main cabin. Luckily, although my rear seats fold down, the knobs are in the boot (or the driver's seat!!!).

That's going to be a bit of a pain in the bum given the proliferation of split fold seats and ski hatches across modern car ranges.

Doesn't that pretty much restrict the cover down to old style saloons with no fold down seats?

Yup! Worth checking any policy very carefully for get out clauses such as that. There are some saloons with split rear seats that have no access through the cabin - not sure if the boot button works without the proximity key in range and not sure how to get in without it!

Definitely check your policy but I had ALL of my equipment stolen whilst I was parked up at a service station several years ago.

The insurance company paid out but, fortunately, the police sunsequently recoved everything. Before you ask I was honest and notified the insurance company and returned their money :)

Would never trust househole insurance to cover anything. Even stuff it specifically outlines.

If you have camera gear, grab yourself some camera insurance. It's pretty cheap, and it covers absolutely every possibly eventually that may occur.

Depends who you're with I suppose. Last year, my wife was in Canada with work and, on the last night, they were taken out for dinner and there was a disco. Whilst there, her handbag was stolen which, as well as her purse, contained her brand new iPhone. The insurance (house contents)were brilliant and sent out a new iPhone within a week. Have to say,

I've never had any problems when making insurance claims but I would echo what everyone says regarding checking your policy.

thank You to all, I will look into some form of camera insurance? anyone know of any that are already on any of the sites.

Mine is all covered old for new on my household insurance, away from the home as well.
