I am looking into getting into taking pictures of people, I usually have been into the whole places, mostly towns and cities.

What would you recommend. I have access to a 350d (not got my own cam at the moment :'( ) and i have access to a few lenses. Just that i want to take some shots of the missus and she wants to do it but i don't want to waste our time by not having the right stuff to hand.

The camera i am looking to get is a 40d and should have one in the next few months. What lenses would you recommend me to get for people and places!

Cheers.

50mm f1.8 is nice for people and places (its very cheap too at about £70 new), a very versatile lens. 85mm f1.8 is on my "to buy" list for portraits.

85mm (f/1.2 if you can afford it, if not then the f/1.8) and/or the 135mm f/2

I can echo the above. The 50mm 1.8 is he best lens for the money, i love mine, and produces excellent shots.
Have you also thought about flash$ just in case ?

430 is fairly cheap now, or even a small canon flash can be had for under £100 would do.

Recommending a £2.5k lens to someone just beginning seems a tad overkill!
 took the words right out of my mouth.

But judging by the amount of L lenses Phideaux has, £2.5k is probably just loose change. lol :p

I'm quite a newbie, and i've bought the 50mm f1.8, it is absolutely brilliant, paired with my Nikon D90 you can see results on my flickr:

I did have an SB900 flash and an umbrella for lighting, backgrounds are just using coloured A1 card.

I recommend the 50mm.

I've thought about buying something slightly like the Nikon 24mm f2.8 for portraits too.

Blimey, if you're paying £2,500 then I'm sure I can sell you several ;)

I'm seeing the MkI go second hand for around $1,300 http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=645164&highlight=85mm and the MkII for $1,600 http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=648331&highlight=85mm

He asked what lenses were recommended and I did qualify by saying the f/1.8 if he was budget limited. Sounds like I shouldn't have mentioned the 135mm f/2 either :shake:.

Certainly for portraiture I'd recommend the 85mm over the 50mm.
