There I was all set to go at an equine event today as the official photographer with my trusty D200 when all of a sudden I couldn't access the menu's and every time i switched the camera back on it took a picture. Couldn't view the screen or anything. Even the WB wouldn't alter which is linked to the command dials.

I had thought long and hard about taking the D50 and put it in just to be on the safe side. Nabbed it back off Mrs Bob and did a lens change quicker than an F1 tyre change and away we went again.

Still can work out what was up with the D200 but the fault seems intermitant. Eventually I switched back to it and have just downloaded the images and all seems well.

Just as well as I was booked for 2 more events from the organiser and also got some equine portrait work.

God did my legs wobble and Ar** twitch when I couldn't sort that problem out htere and then. I will never go anywere without by trusty back up.

Anybody had any similar probs with the D200 - I would be interested to hear before I send it back for repair to the supplier.

Sorry to hear of your problems with the D200.

Glad you had it covered with the D50.

Hope the shoot went well.

If you ever fancy an assistant bob I'd love to have a go at equine some time and I'm in your neck of the woods, ish.

Funny you should mention that Bob as I have an intermittent fault with my D200, sometimes I cannot access the Menu or the preview function, it is just temporary and has only happened a couple of times, thankfully!

Way to go! You are obviously pressing all the right buttons.

Cheers Colin,

The main thought was 'is the camera taking pics that are being written to the card'. The available number of shots was decreasing as I pressed the button and the green CF light was flashing but I just didnt want to take the chance.

If it happens again to you Colin can you switch it off and on and see if it activates the shutter. Mine did. I might email Nikon and see what the score is. ( I am just waiting for the Canon backlash  )

In the last 30 minutes I have just taken two bookings for equine portraits from people I was talking to at the show. :woot: :woot:

Right 700 RAWS to convert and upload and the clocks have gone forward...

I tried that at the time and the shutter wasn't activated so it sounds like a different problem.

700 RAWS?

Aye... Mrs Bob decided that she would have a go with the Camera and wasn't half bad at it. She used the D200 while I battled on. She said she liked the sound of the rapid fire shutter:cuckoo: Luckily she managed some half decent stuff which is rather worrying for me!

Definate email to Nikon I think.

Although I haven't experienced the problem you (and Colin) have Bob ... ... I would be interested in the resolution you end up getting to it ... ;) ... just in case you never know with technology do you ...

No worries mate. I will be emailing them later this evening and will make sure I put the reply up. The D200 has not missed a beat today - typical!

Just a quick update on this thread following my problem with the D200.

It transpired it was the add on grip that had a fault in it and was sending the camera into a tiz! Nikon technical helpline were very helpful and suggested this may be the fault which. I can only assume it is as when I swapped it over for another grip the problem went away and has never returned. The original grip has now been returned to supplier (thank god not HK!) and all is well.... I hope.

Good to hear you've got it sorted

I'm hearing lots of bad things about the D200 grip:

- poor build quality in general (it's plastic rather than magnesium like the D200 body)
- poor fit with the camera (some 'play' in the mount)
- battery holders breaking
- and now your problem!

This is why I am yet to buy one...

^^ Can't believe I'm the first to say this.......should have got a Canon :p
