Right so on the 17th / 18th I'm shooting the Brightling Horse Trials with a press pass (it came today :D) and I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice?
I'll be shooting with a 450d, but I have a 24-70 2.8 in my kit but I've found it to be a little short as I went with a friend who was competing last year and was finding that I had to crop the photos so that they werent so far away.
I hired a 70-200 2.8 last night from LensForHire and I'm assuming that will be better than a 24-70? I'll probably take my 24 with me in my bag with me anyway, but yeah, any kind of tips on good shots would be extremely helpful.

Thank you!

Yeah shoot with the tele lens, make sure you use a high shutter speed, if possible put the camera in Manual mode and use Auto-ISO, I don't know if that's a feature on your canon or not, otherwise I would use Apeture priority and set a high ISO.

And play it safe by shooting wider than you think you should, and crop em down later. Better to crop than to loose a tail or head.

I also shoot Equine events. Show Jumping and Dressage. I use Shutter Priority at 1/320 th. Highish ISO (400) in daylight and let the camera sort the Aperture. It's always worked so far. Centre focus point, I'm also a big fan of back button focusing.

Ah right, telephoto it is then. Thanks :D

I was just also wondering if it would be worth me taking my tripod or would it just be something else to carry? And does anyone have any tips for composition over jumps / dressage?

the shot you want is the horse just clearing the jump with the back legs still on or just off the ground. If the rider is looking at the next jump so much the better. Dont bother with motor drive, just get your timing right!

Many horses arnt that fluid and almost stop before jumping so you get a good chance. The higher the jump the more time you get.....

Doing our local show in August......

(off to tog my daughter and friends tomoz at Wivelsden, anyone else going?)

Tripod will be ballast you need to react quickly. Concentrate on one jump and get it right rather than trying to do more and mess it up! 2 jumps are possible but make one early and one late in the round to give you time to prepare. Pre focus and hold the focus or go manual.

Ooh I didn't see this.
It went really well thank you! I really enjoyed it, the 70-200 was amazing, it did the job perfectly! I'll definitely be going next year.
No you don't need a pass but I went last year and it was £10 per person in a car and 4 of us went so I got one.
Photos are on my website though.
