It's saddens me to learn Epson have ceased production of the V850 scanner.
That said, anyone who owns one may be sitting on an investment. I guess most of us have seen the way the Nikon Coolscan prices have increased and the older 120 scanners are commanding eye watering prices.
And can anyone here justify the cost of a drum scanner?

I guess there is always DSLR scanning but that seems pointless to me.

:(

Do I need a spare?

I've looked at drum scanners, but the Epson flatbeds have always been up to what I need. I suspect that a drum scanner that can handle 10x8 negatives might be a non starter on the grounds of space required, rather as I can't fit a 10x8 enlarger in my darkroom.

I bought a V850 about 18 months ago in anticipation of retirement and having more time for (film) photography; however I haven't retired and the V850 is sitting in my office still not used. I am definitely going to get around to using it sometime. Rather like the 10x8 Intrepid I bought and some other filmic stuff.

Well trying to think from Epson's point of view:- who uses a V850? Pros using film would send off shots to be dev and scanned to labs and joe public wanting to scan their old negs in the drawer would get something cheaper. I have the V750 but so much more convenient to send off a roll of film to say Filmdev who use good scanners. So IMO the market is only for competent amateurs who do their own dev and scanning and to scan their VG shots taken in the past and it looks like Epson do not think there is enough to continue to produce the V850????

When I go to the Epson uk web site it says no longer available.
I know there are suppliers out there sitting on stock buy, as far as I know, when they're gone they're gone.
