No
I've been scanning with my Epson 4180 and I just noticed how the backlight in the lid appears to not be even - it's quite noticeably lit by two different tubes. I know the V500 uses a different light source, but is the main backlight even?

I have a 4180 what do you want me to test and how?

I too have a 4180 - the back light appears to be lit by two different tubes, so there's a bit of a dark part in between on mine? Is that the case with yours?

Same as mine i.e. two tubes with a dark bit in between....mind you I bought it from the bootie last year for £3 (so it could be faulty) and can't remember if I tested it for negs (h'mm must of done as I like the 35mm neg holder).
Anyway I use it on my 2nd computer for copying photos or docs and if you are unhappy with the neg scanning of yours, I'll find the neg holder and test mine again.

I too like the 35mm holder (it's simple and involves no moving parts - less likely to break).

I'm just noticing that the two tubes appear to create a slightly darker part on images which are quite bright across the negative - however, it's difficult to accurately assess this between two scanners due to the myriad of different settings/exposure differences.

So you think there might be three tubes in the lid and it's a coincidence that both of ours have the middle one blown  I'll scan the neg I've posted recently, that has even fields and sky, and see if any problems.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I think it's designed like that - that's why the 35mm holder has no translucent plastic covering the negatives (each tube, each negative strip) and the 120 holder has the plastic cover (which diffuses the two tube lights).

But I just wanted to see if it was the case with other Epson scanners :)

Anyway AAMOI there is nothing wrong with the 4180 scanner for 35mm negs but why bother home scanning when the Asda scan is good enough and think without more work on my scan, the Asda one looks better:-

Asda

V750 @ 4800 dpi...If I adjusted the other ones (in Photoshop) I doubt you would see much difference on a computer screen with forum upload sizes.
