i went out to buy ink for my lads Epson C80 today, then i thought the better of it , as they totaled £65 for all for carts,

so , whats the next step,

well i could buy him a new printer, say an Epson C240 , they are £69 with a free pack of epson inks , as well as the ones supplied,

then i thought,

why dont i have a new machine ( currently have an Epson R300 and an Epson 2480 scanner ) , a combined machine would be nice, so i came up with the above

any one got one, or used one

I don't know this particular printer Vince, but being Epson, I've no doubt it will be excellent. It's a ridiculous situation now where in many cases you can buy a new printer complete with a full set of inks, for little more than the horrendous cost of the manufacturer's own replacement ink cartridges.

The reason of course is that they make virtually nothing on the printers, but rely heavily on consumables like ink and paper to make their profit.

i have seen this printer in Staples for £199,

but after some digging around on the net, i have found that ' EBuyer' are selling it for £174 all in

any one used em ?

I've been using an Epson RX425 for a little over a year now and love it - excellent quality, I use compatible cartridges in it and am STILL delighted with the results!

I assume the one you're looking at is the printer/scanner/copier/card reader? Handy being able to do the lot in one package - that was what sold mine to me!
 
this may seem like a daft question, but can you use these photo printers for documentation aswell? :shrug: ie, is it worth buying a photo printer if I mostly want a document printer, but would like to be able to print my photos aswell?
 
You can buy photo printing paper and a printer then print your own pictures which is very convenient if you only want a few prints. If you need a batch done then it is cheaper and usually better (not to mention easier) to just upload the picture files to an online printing service and have them print them for you.

After my recent holiday I got 300 7x5's done at a cost of 10p a print. Not sure you could even buy the paper for that.

I have an Epson R200 which has nice cheap inks and does a pretty good photo but printing loads of pictures is just too much hassle. And yes it works fine as a general printer for the other 95% of the time.
 
One thing to watch for is the volume in the cartridge in a new printer. I know when I brought me R340 they were full cartridges, so Epson may well be OK. But I know that HP supply their printers with 'demo' cartridges, that is half full (or half empty if your a pessimist) :)

Photo printers are quite happy at running documents through, its just that you may want to make a point of setting the appropriate printing mode to ensure economical printing. At least with the Epson ones you can buy the cartridges all separately :)
 
Does your son do a lot of high quality printing? A set of compatible inks would be about £7, that would save you a fortune. Or have you just 'got a spend on'? :)
 
If they are compatible you can get the mutlipack (6) cartridges (genuines) from jessops shops for £39.99 these work in r300 and a few others.....:thinking:
