Yes
I want to move my printer which will require a longer usb cable. Can anyone please confirm that I only need a genic usb 2.0 type A to B or something more specific

Depends how far you want to move it, more than 5 metres you will need an active cable.

I think about 10 to 12 feet should be enough. As a total novice in computing type things what's an active cable

Depends on how far you need to move it. If you can get a conventional USB cable that's not excessively long then that should be OK. However if you need a longer one , you will probably need an extension cable which is different to a normal USB, in that it has a USB A female connector rather than the "B" connector. I use a Blekin active adapter cable which is 10 m long and that works just fine

It is basically a 1 port USB hub. It reconditions the signal that are carried by the USN cable in order to allow the USB to be longer than the rated 5m in length.

Thanks for the quick replies. Just to confirm if I only need to move a short distance then a generic type a to b will be fine ?

As long as you don't buy cheap and nasty you will be fine. A general rule is that the thicker the cable the better quality it is.
