Epson R2400 printer

Hi, I have been offered an Epson R2400 printer which I am going to look at on Tuesday. My knowledge of this printer is limited so any info on what to look out for, what there like as a printer would be appreciated.

Not 100% sure how old it is as the original owner passed away around 6 months ago so is being sold by a family member and hasnt been used since he died. The guy who had it was a keen photographer and it has been well looked after untill his passing away. Is it likely that the print heads and nozzles will be ok? as I know this can be an issue with inkjets if ink is left in them and there not used. There are no disks with the printer but I imaging I can get drivers etc easy enough on the net.

They have not set a price as they do not really know anything about it and what it is worth. What would be a fair price to offer?

Well, they were about £500 new. I've got one. It's a superb printer. The inks are expensive if you use genuine Epson (I do), but the output quality really is superb.
I've left mine for a few months and it's been ok when I've returned to print. No blocked heads etc.
Price? Not sure. £200ish, probably. certainly worth having.

you'll need to test the carts to see if the ink is ok. 6 months without use means the heads will need some serious cleaning. I've had mine since it was released with minimal problems but you never know with printers.

I personally would not buy a used R2400 as it is quite an old printer and if anything was to go wrong then you would have to pay a lot to get it fixed. £150 would be a resonable . you'll probably have to buy a new set of inks too so a CIS from fotospeed would be a good thing to buy too.
 
I bought one and had loads of problems with colour because I was not using the genuine ink. A set of cartridges for this printer are quite expensive at around +/- £100 so be wary. You can get print head cleaner on Ebay or Octoinkjet at around £10-15 which is probably cheaper than attempting to unblock and flush with genuine ink. If you can get it bought, working and filled with ink for £250 or less then you have an A3 printer at about £200 less than you can get one new *if* you need one capable of astonishing black and white. If you only intend to print colour then excellent results can be had from a new printer such as the Epson 1400 at about £220 and cartridges are cheaper too. Just my take.

Poah suggested the CIS, does make it cheaper but an outlay of £175 and probably more particularly if you want paper. Just contemplating it myself.
 
Even if the heads are blocked its well worth that sort of money
 
Well, went to look at it tonight. Didnt get chance to actually test it but the guy is a friend of a friend and everything looked in immaculate condition. I did the deal at £85 and then he bought out a box of 25 and box of 50 A3+ hahnemuhle fine art paper and a box of Epson A3+ 25 sheets semi gloss and gave me that to go with it. All in all a pretty good result I think.

He also had a never used, boxed Wacom intuos3 A5 tablet for sale which I have also bought for £80.

And an Epson pervection 4870 photo scanner with loads of bits and pieces which I am thinking of buying but not sure.

Gonna get round to trying out the printer over the next couple of days and see how much head cleaning is needed.

Bargain!! The Wacom was a steal too!!
 
the ink is probably a bit dead after 6 months and the cost it will take to clean them you'll be better off buying a CIS to start with. You maybe lucky and not need much of a clean.

get yourself the SSC print utility as it can reset the service counter and do cleans on colour or blacks only plus a deep clean.

Thanks for the links. I collected the printer and the Wacom this evening and paid £150 for the 2 items. All inks in the printer are empty apart from a small amount in the magenta and yellow and half in the light black. Im going to order a cleaning kit at the same time as ordering some inks (cant afford the CIS at the mo, plus know very little about it so just gonna get it up and running and get some ink through it and go from there.
 
How can you afford NOT to buy a CIS System?

Look at it like this.

Full set of cartridges will set you back about £90 (inc matte black if you want to use the art papers too)

These cartridges hold about 13ml in each

They will empty VERY QUICKLY then you're out another £90 to fill (although not all at the same time).

NOW with a Photospeed CIS (I use it too) you get the system and a 65ml bottle of each ink. Sounds a lot at £200 but that's just around the cost of 2 sets of ink cartridges yet you get 5x as much ink. When you buy the refil bottles you get 125ml for £25. That same amount of Epson ink for the R2400 would cost you ovewr £100!!!! It's really a no brainer.

Also you get free custom profiles.

Don't waste £90 now filling it and then realising two weeks down the line that you're having to fill it again :) Been there seen it wore the T shirt!

Also I'd advise not filling it with cheap compatible cartridges as these can be hit and miss.

Fotospeed's inks are long tested and work perfectly well - I don't see any difference to the original inks.

Good luck thougfh with an excellent printing device. Mine is still printing well using Fotospeed inks and a variety of papers (all with custom profiles).

I bought a bottle of Magic Bullet. Is a little scary at first but it works fine :) You might need to leave it for a while to work properly.

Not sure what POAH uses?

you'll have to use a lot of ink to purge the cleaning fluid out of the system anyway
 
Uses a lot of ink during cleaning cycles - another great reason not to buy the Epson cartridges!
