Yes
have a Epson SX205 ... basic but good for letters and 4x6" prints

have been using "compatible" inkjet cartridges from JETTEC - all ok other than a warning that they are not originals - worked fine

now the replacement program says "Not original - insert original" and refuse to charge

so £40 for a set of Epson originals [for a £39 printer!!] ---or -- in the bin
and buy another manufacturer........

crafty bstds..........

RANT OVER

dont even get me started on "compatible" inks. accounts have told everyone to use 3rd party carts in our printers as part of a money saving scheme.

oddly enough our printer repair costs have gone through the roof through ink/toner leaks and/or the printer getting stuck on a "consumables" error.

3rd party carts suck. false economy.

It may be the "chip" on the black cart that's the problem. I believe Epson use this cart to detect the the validity of the others. If you have another Black try that.

Failing that get on to Jettec.

i got some asda own brand cartridges for my Canon printer. the black worked fine, although not quite as good as proper canon, but the colour would only print in yellow and blue. tried everything and eventually had to buy proper canon ink. false economy.

disgraceful cos now i throw a perfectly good 1year old printer in the bin and buy a new one again with inks for £39 on sale at PC World............:bang:

dont all scream at once --- yes it will go to charity.......

yes - I wouldn't mind if they leaked or didn't work but the JETTEC were perfect

it was the sneaky way EPSON *prevented* me using them I objected too - rather like your car refusing to start if tyres replaced with non-OEM

again ...........EPSON...

What makes you think another manufacturer will be any better ?, My canon 9500pro is a joke for ink usage and won't let you print even when they start getting low

It's not only Epson that it's cheaper to buy an inexpensive printer than a set of inks.

Canon iP1900 £25. Set of Inks £26

HP do come a bit close as well.

We did the same a couple of years back, but with toner. IN the end we put a few Large MFDs on each floor on a serviced contract, so you pay per page printed. Toner included. So it actually works out very cheap. Our first year saving on printing costs is £125,000

Speaking to a friend of mine in IT yesterday and all the major manufacturers are starting to ship their printers/carts so you can only print so many sheets before they stop and give you the ultimatum!

Time for a CIS!

Look at that cheap printer as a 'Loss Leader' for the manufacturer, they make the money back on the consumables, they all do it.

Doesnt make sense in this case. For example, Canon ship with full carts. So to replace the printer with a printer and full set of carts is cheaper than a set of carts....:bonk::bonk:

Good point, most ship with 'installation' carts, same size but only half full.
Dell were the worst at this with those buy a PC/laptop and get a free printer offer, not sure I know anyone who actually bought any replacement cartridges though :)

how are epson being sneeky? i believe it states in most printer vendors small print that the use of 3rd party consumables voids any warranty agreement (or at least they used to say that) usually because they cannot guarentee the quality or validity of the carts being used in their devices.

indeed, long term i believe we are going down this road. we already have 2 whacking great canons in the design dept on this sort of contract.

I think they now say damage caused by the ink will void the warranty, but unless it can be proven to be the ink the warranty is still valid. I seem toremember they had to change the wording due to some european law.

that's not the issue

they have PREVENTED me the CHOICE of using carts other than their own !

Microsoft were taken to the Supreme Court for similar ideology

it does seem i struck a raw nerve here......

20 posts in the hour

anyone come up with a good printer for home use with a realistic ink usage?

Don't use ink anymore due to the cost. Moce on to Dye Sublimation.

11p a print for 6*4, 27p a print for 6*9. That's finished print, not just ink or media.

However, you do pay a premium for the printer.

I got the printer for a couple of events I did last year, and will be doing more this year, in the meantime I use it to print out my holiday snaps for the mrs :D:D

like i said, because they cannot guarantee the quality of those 3rd party carts.. (which in my experience tend to be shoddy build and damage printers)

theres no guarantee 3rd party carts will work, you pays your money you takes your chances..

actually MS were taken to court because of monopoly reasons.

yet JETTEC carts worked perfectly

""they have PREVENTED me the CHOICE of using carts other than their own""

isn't that a monopoly issue?

I'm using a £30 HP scanner/printer for all my business use. Still on the original carts after 5 months.

Never had a problem with HP. Got a b&w laser that's nearly 20 years old now and only needed new toner twice!

What I really really really object to is the printer refusing to print because it thinks I've run out of ink.

I WANT TO CARRY ON PRINTING UNTIL IT FADES, IT SHOULD BE MY CHOICE :annoyed:

and don't get me started on my Epson R200, it won't print B&W documents when any of the colours run out :bang:

:bat:

I use a £30 Canon i350 the replacement cartridges cost about £10 for 5 colour and 5 black. Its ace.

Its not perfect but for printing my kids every day stuff they are excellent printers, you can still pick them up off ebay for a reasonable price.

Oh and yes it carries on printing even when one of the colours runs out ;)

Take all the cartridges out and turn the printer off.

Turn it back on and replace one cartridge at a time. (closing lid down and letting the ink run through a charge for each cartridge) That should make the printer accept them.

Can you not revert to the original software?

thanks ...that worked a treat...............

I've already said that mate...he hasn,t bothered to try it...

patience mate....:D

late at night, bottle of wine - didn't feel up to messing with downloading software and screwing printer

""Up to day this software works under Windows 95/98/ME/2K2/XP""

no mention of Vista.....:(

looks like my printer has now accepted carts, so thanks all for any advice.....

I would never use epson again. I put a full set of original inks in once when I was getting messy printouts. I still got messy printouts so did a nozzle clean about 3 or 4 times and it said the cartridges were empty. I took them out and cut them open to find they were completely full. I did this for a while afterwards and found it was estimating when the cartridges might be empty and it was always way off.

I use a canon now and you can see the cartidge is as dry as a bone when you take it out. And it has never needed any cleaning at all in over 2 years.

canon pixma ip4000 btw.

An Epson man once stated in a pc mag that the half full cartridges in new printers was a myth. He said it just wasn't economically viable to have a separate production line to only half fill some just for new printers.
