I'm looking to by a good conditioned secondhand 40D to upgrade from my great EOS400D as i think it's about time that i progressed.
Firstly, am i making a good decision and will i see a noticeable difference in the quality of my photos.I mainly shoot using a sigma 17-70 lens.
Secondly, should i opt to buy a 40D with the canon kit lens or would i be better sticking with the Sigma lens on a 40D
Help appreciated.

I went from a 350D to a 40D earlier this year. I find the 40d a lot more comfortable and ergonomic to use do to the increased size and wheel on the back. There are a good few more settings as well, one I use a lot is spot metering.
ISO handling is also superior and the additional mega-pixies give you bit more to play with when cropping. I am very happy with my move over to the xxD. It just feels and acts like a more professional camera than the xxxD.

As good as the kit lens (IS) is, I don't see any issues with using the Sigma although I haven't used one. My Sigma 10-20mm and 50mm are fab.

I use both cameras and have a sigma 17-70 as my standard lens on both cameras, image quality is fine with both

I did that move with the 17-70, was well worth it!!

The 400d was my first digital camera, on my move from 35mm... I loved it, however I then moved to the 40d, and liked that a lot more. The magnesium alloy body gave it a much better quality feel, the preview screen was better, the flexibility of options was greater, the ISO was improved - and overall it was a definite step up.. The problem is, once you move up, you'll want to do it again and again... I'm at the 5dmk2 now - the latest '1' series would be nice - but can't justify it for now :) Good luck if you go for the change..

Thank you all for your helpful comments. I spoke with the missus last night and she said instead of going for a secondhand 40d, why don't i go for a new 7d, well i wasn't going to argue with her!
Having said that, i am a little nervous about making such a jump and also would my sigma 17-70 lens be any good on the 7d?? I just don't know what to do for the best.

Go for it. Before you know it you'll have a load of new lenses too!

It depends what you shoot.

I have a 40D because I shoot wildlife, so a faster body with more external control is a real advantage, but I doubt the IQ/ISO performance is drastically, or even noticeably better then a 400D.

The differences are in the performance, not the image quality.
