Just bought eos500D which comes with it's own utility software. As my OS is Linux I have only managed to install the Canon Raw editor. The rest of the software on the disk is incompatible. Can anyone tell me if I am at a great disadvantage not having Canons software as I dont know exactly what it is all capable of. I already have transfer software, CS2 and a Linux equivalent of Lightroom, which have been adequate for my previous non dslr cameras.
Is there anything vital I will be missing by not installing EOS Utilities. I have access to a Windows computer if a vital firmware update occurs. Thanks in advance.

The only thing that I have found that I cannot do, that I would want to, is remote/tethered shooting.

F-Spot is a replacement for DPP, to some extent. Rawstudio can fill in the gaps.

Copying and editing picture styles isn't possible either.

Otherwise, I cannot think of anything major.

Only other 'problem' I had was with dcraw changing the white balance of pictures, this was due to my version of gallery2 having a different command line for dcraw than what could have been optimal.

I have the 500D and find Elements 9 to be a much better tool. I usually have both pieces of software up at the same time as I find it easier to flick through images in the Canon software and actually process them in Elements 9.

As good as Elements 9 is, its organiser isnt great.

Thanks for your help coldpenguin. I have f-spot in the repository so will give that a browse. At this moment I'm not bothered about remote tethering. From what you have told me I see no need to grab a copy of windows. Thanks

Can I ask what the Linux equivalent of Lightroom is?
Thanks Wayne

I understand Darktable is the equivalent. I have no experience of lightroom so only have what I have read to go on. If you know this not to be the case then I stand corrected.

I haven't used lightroom, so I am not sure exactly what it can do.

I /suspect/ that digikam can cover a lot of it:

I am waiting for version 2, should support face recognition as well. However I use F-spot for managing the photos on my linux machine whilst travelling.

I struggle with Gimp, as a replacement to Photoshop, it has the same features, just goes about it a different way (I started with photoshop X years ago now). I use a Windows desktop for most of my photo needs (and 'cos the wife can't handle linux), but use a linux laptop whilst travelling currently (although I aim to get a windows device for tethered shooting on my next upgrade). However, my work is all linux, and all the other devices in the house are linux.

I used to be a big advocate of Gimp as a Photoshop alternative, until I discovered that I could install Photoshop in Wine.

I haven't watched all the videos but they seem fairly similar-ish.
