Just loaded the software that came with my Canon DIGITAL EOS Solutions CD that came with my EOS 30D.

Each time I try to run the EOS Utility that's supposed to permit me to upload pics from the camera, I get an message Application cannot be launched.

HAYALP!!!

Has anyone come across this before? How do I get round it?
PC has loads of disk, memory and oomph, and is running XP Pro. All the software loaded successfully. Digital Still Camera toggles in and out of the Device driver list as I turn the camera on and off.

The documentation suggests the EOS Utility should be launched automatically as soon as I turn the camera on but this doesn't happen.

It's all a bit frustrating as I'm gagging to play with my first set of images.

Any help very gratefully received.

Regards,
Clive

Have you tried re-installing the canon software?

or

Have you got a card reader that you can plug your CF card into?

Thanks, Steep.
Yes, I've re-installed TWICE, with the same results.
I even downloaded a 30D-specific driver and installed that, to no avail.
Have just dumped a large technical support issue on Canon via their web-site.
Cheers,
Clive

make sure you have the latest windows drivers, thats all i can think of

Hmmmm - I have a similar problem with the Eos Capture program with my 20D - 'Camera not recognised!' - Re-installed twice no joy...(sorry I can't offer help but maybe someone reading this thread will have a bell rung...)

I've just managed to update the name in my 350D but, I had to download all the latest version of the software from the Canon site :D

Should have added, I can now upload pics through it as well.

Ok Willy...

Try what I have listed below.... and it may make you and a lot of other folks happy.

Make sure you have the latest MS downloads and patches applied and get the latest updates from Canon's web site too! For example, EOS Utility, ZoomBrowser and Camera Window plus the correct WIA & Twain drivers. The software on your Canon Support CD will be out of date :)

If you DO NOT feel comforatible editing your Windows XP registry DONT do this. Other wise follow these steps and this WILL (or should) fix your problem . . . I will not accecpt any responcibility for a hosed system, do this at your own risk . . .

0. BEFORE YOU BEGIN BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY!!!

1. Launch the Registry Editor. To do this: START > RUN > type REGEDT32 > click OK.

2. Browse to the following key(folder): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Canon \ CameraWindow (or EOS Utility)

3. Set permissions on the "CameraWindow" key (folder) to "FULL CONTROL" for "EVERYONE". To do this right click on the "CameraWindow" folder and select the option "Permissions" then click the "FULL CONTROL" box for each user listed.

4. Create "CameraWindowMC" sub-key(sub-folder) in "CameraWindow" key(folder). To do this: Right click on the "CameraWindow" key (folder), select new, Key. Then name it "CameraWindowMC"

5. Create "InstallPath" string in "CameraWindowMC" subkey, set installPath value to: C:\Program Files\Canon\CameraWindowMC\ To do this: Left click on the subkey (subfolder) CameraWindowMC then right click in the string area on the right hand side, select NEW > STRING name it CameraWindowMC then right click on the new string select MODIFY and the type in the value C:\Program Files\Canon\CameraWindowMC\

6. Leaving the Registry Editor open, uninstall the Camera Window by going to START > PROGRAMS > CAMERAWINDOW > CAMERAWINDOW UNINSTALL

7. Back in the Registry Editor Select the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM\U SB and set FULL CONTROL for everyone using the same steps mentioned in step 3.

8. Close REGEDT32 and reboot PC

9. Run the Canon updates rather than the main installation from the supplied CD

10. Select Easy Install, during the installation the program will indicate that several programs have already benn installed, press ok and it will continue. This will install the Camera Window portions automatically and register it with ZoomBrowser.

11. Attempt to download images (restart computer if the camera is not detected.)

Hopefully you will be able to use your Camera and software okay now. :)

Many thanks for all your suggestions, folks.
Have downloaded and installed latest updates today and followed StuvUk's very detailed suggestions to the letter.
Sadly, to no avail! Bloody PC!
Camera is reconised by laptop but none of the software is launched automatically and the (new) EOS Utility still cannot be loaded.
I have a similar problem my Windows98SE machine (the above is XP Pro) but the 98SE machine can, at least, acquire images from the camera using the TWAIN interface. Not ideal but, until my 52-in-1 card reader arrives, it'll do.
Thanks again, everyone, for all your suggestions, folks.
Any more bright ideas will be tested, too, but I fear this laptop is in a strop and doesn't want to play with my new toy!
All the best,
Clive

This is very unlikely to be an issue with the canon software!
It is highly likely your USB contoller(s) have got their knickers in a twist and are not passing the correct datat to the EOS utility application. The USB controller(s) need to be reset.
Go to the Windows "Device Manager". Find the USB controllers list - expand the list. "Right Click" each entry in turn and select "Uninstall" (Don't panic!! They will all be restored and reset when you reboot afterwards. - that should cure the issue!
:)

If that doesn't, just buy a card reader. It's so much more useful IMO.

I bought a card reader in the end, it's much faster, easier and more useful.

I believe you can get in to the camera from My Computer and browse files same as you would a usb drive. I am moderately sure I've done that before...

wow, is this really still a problem over 3 years later?

Have you ticked the box 'Start EOS utility automatically when the camera is connected'?

Looks like you were right!
