Hey guys n gals,

Having a bit of a problem getting some photos of my camera.I have always plugged my camera into the computer with the cable and used EOS utility to selected and download the raw files. But today it just wont go at all. The program will crash the first time and then when i re open it it'll refuse to do anything and shows busy on the camera and the program.

Any ideas, i have tried reinstalling EOS n the same result, i also tried iphoto but it seemed to convert the files to jpeg instead of the raw shot on camera.

Cheers,

Tyler

What operating system are you using? Do you have the latest version on the application from Canons website? If you are running Windows checking the application section in eventvwr may help you out. It could be a corrupt driver.

Had this the other day, only thing that finally got it to settle down was uninstall/reinstall

Have you tried using a card reader instead of a wire link? If you have Phoshop, it may be worth downloading directly to that.

And do you have (this may be a silly question) enough memory on your computer?

You can get the latest up dates here, don't worry about camera model they all use the same software.

Personally I would invest in a card reader, all the plugging cables in and out and bending that rubber flap every day is just not for me. :(

A few things:

1) EOS Utility is a right pain! It's really badly written, and you can have multiple instances open at the same time. That means the camera can't work out which one to talk to, and so does nothing. When you are using EOS U always start the software first, let it fully start up, and then plug the camera in. Wait for the camera to stop saying "BUSY" before you try to do anything at all. If you get to the point where you are stuck at "BUSY" (which happens depressingly often) then a restart (a proper power off one, not a Mac sleep/no sleep one) should fix the problem.

2) I wouldn't bother using EOS U if all you want to do is move files. Just plug the camera in and it should show up as an external device (or the card will at least). This is for Windows, but in Win 7 can do it then Mac OS certainly should!

3) Get a card reader. They are a few £, and saves you using your camera as a £1000 version! Every time you put a card in the camera you can potentially bend a pin in the card socket, and that is probably at least 10 times more expensive to fix in the camera than it is to buy another reader off ebay.

Guess point 3 depends if he ever takes the card out of the camera ;) no chance of bending a pin if it never comes out.... :) jon

Have you added a web cam to your system? EOS Utilities have a conflict with other digital optics S/W - Logitech for example.

As mentioned a card reader is ace. The transfer rate from the camera is very much not good.

Speed of hard drive will determine download speed but not the possibility of down load, If you have an older system, however, it may just need time to read all the ginormous RAW files. That's right 7D files even with Copyright info off and other options off are still huge files. If the red light is on or flickering (on the 7D) it's working you just need to be patient and hope you system doesn't hang or worse crash.

Cheers for the help guys. Tried a few things and another reinstall and no luck so picked up a card reader and all is well.

I remember having a similar problem, switched to a card reader and use Adobe Bridge to import and lifes been pretty sweet since then, the card readers are much faster anyway.

use Canon ZoomBrowser EX Memory Card Utility which is part of Canon ZoomBrowser. My understanding which may be wrong is that EOS utility is primarily for contolling the camera rather than downloading.

Card reader is really the way to go:thumbs:

Canons own software is also a pain in the bum....Recently bought an S95 and after installing the enclosed software Zoom Browser EX has installed itself as the default downloader - despite having Aperture installed which I use with my DSLR.
Digital Photo Pro is the only other Canon stuff I use - again with a card reader.

As has already been said EOS Utility is mainly used for 'Tethered' shooting
