Was just reading the specs on the latest Canon.
I can't figure out who the target audience for this is.
Plus the cost is eyewatering.

Sports photographers mainly. It's basically a mirrorless 1Dx. You don't need 50 or 60 MP sensors for sports photography, you do need something with a high burst FPS that's built like a tank. Look at any football match, motorsport meeting, the Olympics etc and every accredited photographer will be using a camera like this.

Its a little less money than the EOS 1Dx MkIII but yeah aimed at the Pro end of the Sports market, and the 1Dx users

I do like the look of it, it is one of th bettter looking mirroless from Canon.

Way out of my pay scale too :D

Apparently it's not a replacement for the 1DX3 though, just another option. They'll apparently keep the 1DX3 as the flagship for a few more years.
I think it's positioned to tempt the pro sports shooters and show that mirrorless is the future.
When the 1DX3 is due for replacement in 2-3 years, that's when I think Canon will bring out a flagship R1 model to sit above the R3.
The R3 is around £5900, but the 1DX3 is £7k. I reckon the R1 (or whatever they call it) will probably be around £7k or perhaps a bit more, to differentiate it from the R3.

The prices are getting scary now for top end Canon cameras. I mean, the R1 is likely to be £7k plus, if not £8k. Expensive for the hobbyist, that's decent second hand car or very nice, b/new motorbike territory, just to put some context on it.

The R3 offers a lot but as I said in another thread, I wouldn't drop near £6k on one, especially as already owning a 5Div, the difference between the 2 just isn't enough.

I may be tempted into the R system though if the much rumoured crop R is ever released, it's likely to be a 3rd of the price of the R3 and offer much the same at a guess, with slight knocks from the cripple hammer, say 20fps instead of 30 for example.

That said, when the times does come to replace my 5D, if I'm still alive by then, then I'd go mirrorless, as it is, like it or not, the future.

Professional camera bodies have always been too expensive for the average enthusiast to afford, but then so have many professional tools.

Well, yes but photography is one of those that hobbyists will buy the top gear. There are quite a few on these forums with 1DXs and suchlike and they are non pro. I have a pro body but it's a hobby for me. I know it's a choice thing too (buying such gear) but I do think the prices of some gear is getting a bit rich. People will pay it too, which is I think why prices are going this way.

I'm not saying it's wrong per se, each to their own but it's getting a bit too rich for me personally. (y)

Well, considering that the original Canon EOS 1D cost 750,000¥ (£5000 approx) twenty years ago, I think it's pretty good value for money.

Prices are going up but this was always going to happen. I suppose a lot of Canon / Nikon profit actually came from the entry level DSLR kits sold to newcomers and hobbyists, and that market doesn't really exist anymore in anything like the scale it did 5 or 10 years ago. Most people are happy with a decent phone camera most of the time. I never take my DSLR on holiday and rarely take it on days out as my phone camera is good enough for snapshots and holiday pics.

So the only market left for them to make a profit from camera sales is the mid-range to high end, enthusiast and pro level cameras. Canon lens prices particularly are a bit nuts compared to a few years ago.

Some of the newer lenses are clearly better than the old ones though, so there's that. Plus when we look at introduction prices adjusted for inflation etc the eye watering prices can sometimes seem almost reasonable, especially when they're better lenses.

especially when they're better lenses.
Are they really? Full plastic construction, no real manual focus ability (only simulated) don't give confidence such lens would last more than just a few short years. Many of Ef ones were solid metal construction and there was like nothing lacking from iq. Say 100-400 ii or any of 70-200...
