Eos non digital lens on digital Eos

Hi folks,

At the moment my partner is looking at getting me a digital SLR. Unfortunately we're on a bit of a tight budget with around only £150 - £180 to spend. I have seen some second hand body only deals that are in the price range so my question is would the lens on my Canon Eos50E work on a digital Eos. As I inherited the camera from my Dad, all I know about the lens is what's written on it, i.e. Sigma 20-200 Aspherical IF. Any help or advice would be gratefully received, even if it's just to say we need more money LOL!!

By the way, apologies if this has been discussed millions of times before, I did try searching but couldn't find anything that answered my question.

Some do, some dont. I have a Tokina 28-70 2.8 from film days and it works fine on a Canon 30d
 
Canon's own EF lenses made in the days before DSLR's should work fine on a digital body.

Third-party lenses are a bit hit-and-miss, due to Canon not releasing the specs of the EF mount and electronics, which forces Sigma, Tokina etc. to reverse-engineer their lenses. Sometimes they don't get the compatibility 100% correct, which means that the 3rd party lens which worked fine with a film SLR or first-generation DSLR might not function properly with a modern DSLR model. Sigma have offered a re-chipping service.. don't know about other 3rd party brands though.

As stated, third party lenses may or may not work on EOS digital bodies.
If you are contemplating a Sigma, Tamron or other third party lens, try it on the body to ensure compatibility before parting with cash.
I have two Sigma lenses which were bought to go with an EOS 5 film body, neither will work properly with a digital body.
 
A lot of the older sigma lenses have issues working with more modern digital bodies. I've got a Sigma 28-200 1:3.8-5.6 UC Aspherical that used to work fine with my EOS-5 35mm camera (until the body died on me) but would only work on the EOS450D with wide open aperture and manual focus. Any change to that setting and the body ERR99's on me. I think it's because rather than licensing the EF specification from canon, Sigma chose to reverse engineer their own version (and didn't do a particularly good job of it!) When the lenses were reasonably current, Sigma would keep making upgrades to the EF compatibility module to allow for newly released bodies, but mine's a bit too old to still be in that program.:shrug:
 
Some Sigma lenses dont work with the DSLR's, I have a Sigma 35 - 80 that works fine with my EOS 100, but brings up Error 99 on my EOS 30D. as above take it with you and try it.

If you have problems with ERR99 then send it back to Sigma and they'll rechip it for you for nowt, I beleive.
 
Thanks for the info folks, after looking around we managed to get an Eos10D with a Canon 35-80 lens for slightly under £180 which makes me a Very happy Moose indeed :woot::banana::woot:

Just for information, I emailed Sigma regarding re-chipping and the reply I got back would seem to indicate that they no longer offer the service;

Thank you for choosing Sigma products.

Unfortunately I don’t think this would be compatible at all, and cannot be re chipped because the parts and service are no longer available.

Not sure though if that's just for this lens or in general.
