Right, here is my conundrum.

I really like the 600D and would benefit from the swivel screen, and would enjoy having effects such as miniature etc. and everything else the 600D has to offer that the 550D doesn't.
But my other thought is that the 550D offers the same image quality for a smaller price, leaving me money to buy a lens better than the ordinary kit lens and maybe some accessories including Flash Gun, Battery spare, & maybe even a cheap mic.
The general concensus on here (from previous threads) is that 'glass' is in fact more important than the body in which case I should get the 550D. But I don't know if I'd be happy or not to sacrifice the swivel screen (as silly as that may sound) as it is just a screen that can swivel.
Please Help!

550D/600D use the same sensor and are effectively the same camera. See:

for a comparison. 550D plus 18-55 IS is £600, 600D plus 18-55 IS is £685. The difference: £85 (or £50 if you're buying body only) is not going to buy a lot of decent glass (it will get you the nifty fifty, but that's about all). Up to you if you'd use the extra features a 600D would bring.

In this case I'd say thats an easier question to answer since you wouldnt be getting any extra image quality from the 18-135(indeed perhaps less quality) so its more down whether you want the range. Personally I'd say that the 18-55 and 55-250 together(perhaps the 50 1.8 aswell) look like better value than the 18-135.

I seem to recall seeing a few good deals for the 500D with those two lenses when I bought my 550D a few months ago, the 55-250 is only around £160 by itself these days aswell.

Sounds good, I'll have to take a look around. Thanks for your help :)

Not a canon man myself, but the articulated screen of the 600 would be the one i'd get if I was going that way. Kind of depends on your style I suppose, if you'd use the screen or not.

Theres really nothing wrong with the kit lens in terms of image quality, its weaknesses are range, a low appature at the top end of that range, not so great autofocus and cheaper build quality.

I'v not owned the 55-250 but the impression I get is much the same just with slightly better build quality with a proper focus ring rather than just twisting the end as with the 18-55.

If you want to improve on those then the most affordable lenses are third party ones like the Tamron 17-50 2.8, Sigma 17-70 and 10-20. With Canon your really looking at lenses like the 15-85, 17-55 2.8 and 10-22 which are all £500+.

You talk about a flash gun.

The 600D has built in wireless flash trigger iirc, so can trigger a speedlite flash for off camera flash work.

This alone would make me go for that, I think the accessory for my 550D to do this is about £150 but i'm going to get one as I find my cheap ebay triggers rubbish.

I'll probably get the 600D and then save some money for a Tamron lens or something :)

Why not go for something older like a 30D,40D second hand, ( £250 ish ) and that leaves you plenty for some decent lenses. Start with a decent body, and upgrade the lenses.

If your drawn to the 600D by all these new functions then think about it this way - why can someone who owns a 30D/40D get the exact same shots without these modes ? It's all about practice and having decent lenses :)

I see what you mean but I don't what the extra functions just for the quality of the shot, but I also want them for comfort (articulating screen) and interesting effects (Miniature effect).

I may have a look at the 40D though :)

Edit: So long as it has HD video as well

If your going to be able to afford more in the future thats what I'd do(and indeed did), buy the body you want and then use the kit lens for awhile before desiding on what to buy next.

How about a 60d has all of what you want Inc the miniature effects and articulating screen
Mines in the for sale section with the lovely canon 15-85 efs is usm lens
