Welcome! The 550d is compatible with canons range of ef and ef-s lenses and theres third party lenses like sigma and tamron that make canon fit lenses.

What type of photography do you want to do? This will determine which focal length lenses to buy.

I can help you out with that one a bit as that was my original aim in photography. I started off with a sigma 70-300 apo dg which was a great starter lens and a very good price too. For wildlife you can spend thousands on lenses so all depends on your budget. Have you thought about how much you want to spend?

i started with a 18-55 lens and recently bought 55-250 but found that I still cant get a decent shot as most places you cant get near.
ive looked at the sigma 150-500 but the lowest price is £600 . was hoping to spend a little less than that.

I think £600 is minimum for 300mm+. I've just got a canon 400 f5.6. Options over £600 would include both new and pre-owned versions of: canon 300 f4 + converters, canon 100-400, canon 400 5.6, sigma 50-500 and sigma 150-500. There are many on the forums who speak highly of the sigmas and there are some great shots on the forums taken with the xx-500 sigmas.

Hi,
whats the pro's and cons to having the 50-500 sigma rather than the 150-500 sigma??

The pro's of the 150-500 OS is great reach, great IQ throughout, great stabilization system, good AF speed and great value for money.

The con's are the weight (gets very heavy when handheld all day), hunts for focus at times (more likely user problem) and it needs good light as it's f6.3 at the long end but that's about it.

The IQ is not far off the Canon 100-400 L at it's longest focal length, the AF is very accurate, which is sometimes a problem when shooting small animals in the brush or birds through branches when combined with the weight, as the slight movement will alter focus.
I've got a 100-400 L as well and recently I've been using the Sigma more often for wildlife, just for the extra 100mm reach. My idea is to use the 100-400 on my 7D and the 150-500 on my 5D2 primarily for airshows where the reach is paramount, but it's a great lens for birds and wildlife too.
