Looking for help and advice on setting focus points. I have the manual, but being a simple sailor, the technical jargon defeats me! If someone can help, perhaps they would pm me with a contact number and I will call them back.

I am encouraged by your response!
I enjoy photography. I enjoy doing it well. I enjoy learning - hence my mail. No, I am not computer literate - it was not part of my education. No, I am not technical. That does not mean to say that I have no practical abilities. I had hoped my post would elicit a response to help - not to question my abilities.
No doubt your ego has been massaged by my not understanding.
I trust you will enjoy the feeling of superiority.
What goes around - comes around!

Barry, youve taken it all wrongly here, i was being honest with you based on what you told me, the 1d is a technical camera ergo requires a technical understanding which you have said dont have therefore a less complicated camera would suit you better.

The link i gave you is the holy gospel of 1DMK2N shooters and is a starting point for the vast majority of newcomers to the world of 1 series cameras who bought a 1 series camera for a specific shooting style.

If as you say you only want "to be told what to press" then a point and shoot would probably suit more.

You can now pick up your dummy.

Best to end this now.
Thank you for your help.
The only thing I will say is that I thought this forum was to encourage.
I will not respond further, indeed will think very carefully about posting another question.

Hey Barry,

I have a 1DMKII, and have owned and used cameras since the 70's. The 1D is a little fiddly to set the focus points, so let me ask you ..

What do you want5 to know and how can I help ?

Go into the menu, and then custom functions.

Set custom function 13 to 3 : 9/Active AF point.
Set custom function 11 to 0

You only have to do this once.

When shooting, press the button with the magnifying glass + at the top right of the back of the camera - this enters focus point selection mode.

Then turn the big wheel while looking through the viewfinder to select the point. or press the WB+/- button to return it to the middle point.

That's one way of doing it.

I used to leave mine on all focus points, but, as you say, that's one way of doing it. Incidentally, I find the selection method on the MkII to be easier and more intuitive than on the MkIII.

Thank you so much for your encouraging reply.
I have now been contacted by many other really helpful people, which has gone a long way to restoring my faith in this wonderful site.
I tend to downplay things as that is my way, hence my comment about what to press. Unfortunately, that has obviously been the cause of some misunderstanding about my abilities. In future, perhaps I should say how wonderful I am before posing any questions!
Anyway, thanks again.

Thanks Gary. As always, very helpful.

Or perhaps you should ask the question to the answer you want.

I've watched this closely but didn't intervene as it had appeared to have settled down.

However, that remark is uncalled for, it's antagonistic and not in the spirit of this site. Please think carefully about what you're posting in the future.

yes it did settle down until a certain mr priddis made some backhanded remarks.

i tried to help Barry but he took things way way out of context, i gave him honest answers to questions he posed then he spat the dummy out.

in the 6th post in this thread mr priddis even said he would end it but further down the topic he just couldnt help having a snide pop.

and if you think my reply was antagonistic so be it.

End of.

As I have already said, best to end this now. I have been greatly encouraged by so many positive responses, and my response to Alan was to him alone. If someone was upset by that, then I apologise most sincerely, and that is said with honesty. Incidentally, with regard to dummies, I find I have no need of them.

Both of you stop it.

End of
