I got an order for a certain compact I placed before Christmas for £260 cancelled. As it happens, I'm not bad despite it beign a good deal. Why? Well looking into photography, I've realised I'd much rather get a DSLR. I understand that there isn't a huge difference between the entry level between brands and it comes down mostly to preference, well I love the feel of Nikons, so I want a Nikon. The question is which?

Can I reasonably expect a decent body/lens for 260 quid or am I dreaming? Mainly I want to do strobist stuff and landscapes which will probably mean 2 different cameras!.

Anyways, any advice would be appreciated.

BTW I'm probably going to be going second hand. is this a bad idea.
 
Not sure if you will get a new one but you could prob get a very good second hand D40 with an 18-55mm lens!

Plus the D40 is gooooooooooooddddddddddd

I've never tried it but I've heard good things about it.

Buying second hand isn't always wise and can sometimes be more about luck than anything else, but I've bought loads of second hand camera equipment which has been fine.
 
try and see if you can find a D40x....i've got one and its great!!! They're discontinued now, but some places still sell them.
 
I have a Nikon D40x in mint condition which I bought off ebay only a couple of days ago, cost me £270 but it came with 2 lenses and a whole loads of filters that I dont have a clue about! I seriously recommend one of these.
 
well, lets say sub £300 then lol. I quite like the look of a D40x + kit lens. or would I be better going for a D40 body and a seperate (better?) lens? Is this realistic?

That sounds like you got a decent bargain there!
 
A new D40 with the 18-55 lens is still (even after the price rises) only £244-250 so don't waste your time with a secondhand one.

For Strobist use you want,nay need as ruvor says, a D40, not a D40x or D60, as it will flash sync to a shutter speed of 1/4000 (:bonk:) whereas the D40x and D60 only sync up to 1/200 (:thumbsdown:)
 
Is that on camera? I'm going down the strobist.com route, so the majority of the stuff I plan on will be off camera. I think the other models can be made to sink at higher speeds that way. Nice to see you taking an interest Flash! Your advice is diamond
 
using a D70s and a pair of pw multimax txers in fast mode i can sync wirelessly at under 1/1000th. No reason why a D40 shouldn't be able to do the same.
 
i brought my d40 as a first dslr and loved it, also bought it used off here, makes a cracking buy
 
Something to bear in mind with the D40/D40x/D60 is they only auto focus with AF-S and AF-I lenses, anything else will only manually focus on these bodys.

The D50 will auto focus with pretty much all Nikon lenses, so this expands your choice of lenses. You could probably pick up a decent second hand D50 and a kit lens for the sort of money you're talking about.

Afraid I don't know about any of the flash/strobe sync stuff because I don't use it!
 
Hi - new to the site today and my first post so be kind :wave:

Anyway - I upgraded from a DiMage Z2 to a D40 after doing some research and reading this from Ken Rockwell

I picked one up in absolute mint condition inc the std kit lens from another forum for just £165 delivered and am well pleased with it. Shame about the standard of the its new handler but hey, live and learn eh? :D
 
Alexkidd: I went for the D70. hopefully its not a total lemon :) It is the strobist recomended camera
 
i've still got and occasionally use the d70s it's a wicked camera, good metering, awesome flash sync and all other gubbins and if you've gone for the d70s it has a bigger screen on the back.

oh and it has the inbuilt motor for use with the older lenses and has creative lighting type stuff inbuilt iirc etc etc :D

the 18-200 is wickedly flexible and all the other stuff is just generally handy :)
