I am looking for a canon camera for my daughters school/college work. I need advice as to which would be the better option. The options are EOS 500d 18-55is or the new EOS 1100d with the 18-55is lens. I would like to stay with the cannon as I already have lenses that fit both cameras. Thankyou for you help in advance.

There's not a great deal to differentiate the two models you've picked, now that the 1100D has 9pt AF just like the 500D.
12 megapixels vs 15 megapixels doesn't matter (unless you plan to print enormous photos!)

The 1100D is physically a bit smaller to hold than the 500D, but not by much. If possible, take her into a shop and try them out?

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing that it will be standard a4 prints so the extra 3 megapixels wont make a difference. Will have to take her for a trip out. Thanks again

Worth noting also that the 1100D has a 'Feature Guide' mode, which "provides descriptions of many of the camera’s functions, as well as advice on how to use them in your own photography."

Saves reaching for the manual every time I suppose!

I'd definitely go for the 500d..better build, plus I suspect it will keep its value better if she chooses to upgrade :) Cheers. Paul

A sony A33 would be a better choice, but between these two, go the 500D

The price of the 500d seems to have dropped quite a bit recently, making it a much more attractive option than before. Id agree with the prev posts.. definitely see how they both feel in hand. my hunch would be that the 500d would be a bit more feature packed..but having looked briefly at the specs they are well matched with 9pt af pts, the same metering system as the 550/7d... 12 vs 18mp.. not a big issue for what your saying. check out some of the in depth rv's eg. dpreview and if none of the 500ds features scream out .. might aswell base your decision on feel in hand and price..

just my 2cents.. or 2 pence should i say .. ( i am still extremely new at this & when choosing my dlsr the decider was price and feel in hand as the majority of cameras esp canon/ nikon seem to do a good job..
