Yes
Right ....

£400 (ish), never had a DSLR before, wants to take general photo's, would prefer new (don't know why) but not a must

My fav's at the moment ... in this order...

1. Canon EOS40D @ £419
2. Nikon D3000 @ £369
3. Canon EOS1000D @ £349

or

a s/h Sony A350 from a friend of a friend for £200.

All are with kit lenses which I have no intention of changing, well for as long as possible anyway.

I've touched an felt them and like them all so It's really down to YOU LOT.
I will go with yor advice.

I'm an impatient b****r and will buy a camera this weekend.

Who wins ...... YOU DECIDE !!

I'd go with the 40D out of the 2 Canons. Dunno about that Nikon rubbish though;)

40D easy choice really :)

Might be a bit advanced for a 1st dSLR but when your confident it will be better in the long run!

Should of started a poll option 1 nikon....option 2 refer to option 1 :D

GIMP ALERT EOS450D NOT 40D for £419... SORRY

Gotta agree and say I'd pick the 40D as well. The 1000D and D3000 are properly entry-level and as such won't give you the room that you might need to essentially "grow in to" your camera. Don't get me wrong they aren't bad but jumping in with a 40D wouldn't be a bad choice at all. It'll also be at least a little bit better in (just about) every area except for not having Live View which I hope wouldn't be a problem.

Good luck and have fun with whatever you end up getting, you'll love it.

EDIT: Oh, I see you meant 450D. Hmm, well I'd say go for that then. Not sure what it "loses out" on compared to the 500D but I am definately aware it is a step above the 1000D.

lol :)

I would still go for the 450D. Little bit better specked than the 1000D and will be good for many years. Not sure what the other make is, Nik..... :)

Where you seeing a new 40d for £419?
Guessing thats a typo.

EDIT: I see I was late with my discovery :p

OK, save a bit longer and get the 40D or even a 50D;)

nifty 250???

Who decides you do of course. You will be using it not us.

Opinions are naturally biased.

Otherwise we'd all have the same camera.

i would say the sony for that money...as good as any of the others, but will leave some cash for a decent tripod, memory cards etc...which you will need, believe me.

having said that...i would advise you to try them all out first.go to jessops or similar, and have a play with them all to see which you prefer for ease of use, interface, menu's etc...then make a decision on what suits YOUbest. ;)

Not had an DSLR before? then any one of the four will be a great camera for you. best to throw a dart at the list you will not be disappointed, but if I were you I may aim more to the Sony for the money.

You could pick up a second hand 40D body for around 400 and then pick up the canon kit lens as well. A smidge over the £419 of the 450D.

:agree:

At £200 the Sony is a lot less than the others, so you'll have some money let over when (in a few weeks time) you decide you need another lens.

450D.. and 18-55mm IS, I guess.

Then buy a Canon 50mm F/1.8 (or even better, F/1.4). ;-)

My advice is go into the shop, pick up all of the cameras, and see which one *feels* nicest. That's how you answer everytime.

1 thing though, while in there make sure you pick up and hold a Nikon D90, Nikon D300s, Canon 40D and Canon 50D, and something equivalent in Sony (Sony A700?). The reason I say this is if you go to upgrade you'll want to make sure the brand you've chosen is going to be the brand that you're most comfortable with. It's quite hard to change brands if you've invested in a lot of lenses in the one you chose.

OK, save a bit longer and get the 40D or even a 50D;)

the OP wants it THIS weekend and has a budget of about £400

do you know what the price of a 50D body is at Parks Cameras ? £720...

Obviously, I am the only Sony togger to post as yet, but £200 for a s/h a350 to me is a no brainer.... snap his arm off.

Perfect to learn with..... I love my a200, and mine is the basic model. With the additional £200 spend it on decent glass.
