I have a few domains registered/held with NamesCo and IIRC have at intervals doubled checked the relevant data is properly current/correct.

However, I got an email from Ecom Team advising (copied & Pasted below):-

"Hi,

We’re reaching out because you have information in the Organization field of your domain’s contact details, and recent ICANN policy changes might affect how the ownership of your domain name(s), and your domain, is recorded.

Enom is a domain registrar. Your domain provider partners with us to register and manage your domain name.

Moving forward, please be aware that:

  • If there’s any information in the Organization field, that organization is now considered the “Registered Name Holder”, the legal owner of the domain.
Enom will not display your Organization data in our Whois search results unless you choose to publish it. If you want to publish your registration data, please contact your domain provider.

What you should do:

  • If you wish to be listed as the domain owner as an individual, remove the information from the Organization field of your domain contact details and leave the Organization field blank.
  • If you wish for the Organization to remain the legal domain owner, please ensure the information in the Organization field is accurate and reflects the correct legal ownership.
If you have questions, please contact your domain provider for assistance. If you do not know who your domain provider is, you can search for them here.

Sincerely,

The Enom Team"

On the face of it it is scare tactics to get folks to engage with them but has anyone else come across this situation they describe because AFAIK the domains are & have always been to keep and shift to another platform as I see fit.

Has anyone else seen such an email and based on its statements has there been a change at ICANN ?

Oh, of note Ecom do not name the domain(s) in question and in itself smells fishy i.e. they have been scrubbing the WHOIS databases and used that as an excuse to email folks. Afteral, don't some registrars offer (depending on which TLD) to hide the registrants information for Privacy Purposes ?

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is rolling out a major change in how domain ownership is defined under its updated Registration Data Policy (RDP), which becomes fully effective on August 20, 2025.
Can’t vouch for your email but Enom (not Ecom) is a genuine registrar of long standing.

The from address is:-

Tucows/Enom Team [no-reply@notifications.enom.com]

However, the return path in the message info is :-

Return-path: <1axbxvknmz1y6cu0a4nu9mxq4u8qufs7nwkvr5@20704235t.tucows.com>

I was not necessarily saying they are a shady company but if they are in effect fishing for business that is fishy IMO

So the question still stands, has anyone else been made aware of the ICANN change they mention because NamesCo I have always felt was an 'honest' company and would not try to 'gain' a Registrants ownership. NB I will have to check for my peace of mind whether the 'Organisation field is filled and if so what it says

PS oopps my subject says Enom but I see I wrote Ecom in the body of my post ~ doh!

Enom are probably supplying the service to NamesCo, hence covering their backs.
Thanks the linked info ..... printing it now to read & digest

As appropriate I will contact Namesco for their advice & feedback.

Edit ~ I have opened a 'support ticket' with NamesCo to get their insight & guidance on the matter but having looked but on the face of it, it is just(?) about making sure the Company/Organisation field is left blank........though I surmise a limited company would likely wish to own the domain in the organisations name with the named party as the point of contact?

What they are saying makes total sense - but won't affect many people.
I suspect it will have come out of a revision of terms from the underlying domain registry to provide clarity on ownership where an organisation and person are both listed.

Fred Bloggs
Bloggs Ltd

If Fred leaves the company - does he own the domain / does the organisation?

The rule has always been that if there is an organisation they are the owner and the individual is the contact, but if no organisation then the individual is the owner - and that is what they are now clarifying...

So, just make sure that any domains you own have nothing under organisation and you are good to go - or if they do that it is a business you own...

As mentioned - won't actually make a lot of difference to most people, but there will be some cases where Fred leaves Bloggs Ltd. and claims ownership of the domain / tries to hold it to ransom and this clarifies that is not allowed...

I guess Names co is using Enom as their domain registrar . and its just a general email to inform about updating correct contact info as per ICANN rule ..nothing to worry about it.
