+1. There are times when it would be fine to drive at 70+mph on the motorway and times when it'd be dangerous to go above 40mph. Ditto for normal roads. The driving conditions such as weather, road surface, traffic, population etc all come together.People get hung up on the posted speed limit and dont concentrate on the driving conditions.
go back and read what bernie said.Aye, 12 shunts a day in London police...right...

Just think of the speed ths cops would have to do to catch someone driving like that in fog. That would be dangerous.
for goodness sakeWhat about mr 159mph writing a car off?
for goodness sake. the bit about windscreen chips and parking dents.
not 12 times in a day, no.Did Mr 159mph not right a car off?
commonplace on the M25, soon as I try and slow down to the overhead speed limit sign (which of course is apparently not a real speed limit, try explaining that one to a magistrate)
Matt
they'd just intercept them at the next junction , radio waves go a lot faster than even the fastest dangerous driver.
Also a lot of dangerous driving charges come after some cock has crashed and hurt/killed himself or others - if you manage to drive like a total prat in the fog without crashing you won't (probably) get done - this doesnt make it legal it just means you've got away with it. However when the law of averages catches up with you and you stack it into another car... you'll get charged and rightly so
No such thing as the law of averages
Yes i do know. The 60 limit with a trailer applies to cars also. It was a tongue in cheek comment.
I'm tired of people bleating about being punished for breaking the law. If they don't like it,fine...campaign against it.
standard, far above us mere mortals!
As far as the 70mph limit is concerned, it is a totally arbitray number with little relevance to today's roads and cars.
how those guys get to 200mph carrying what i assume are HUGE balls around is beyond me?!
Yes, excellent film. Guy is fantastic character and a total loon!Have you watched "Closer to the edge?" (Film about TT with Guy Martin.. normal bloke (though a bit tapped).. get him on a bike and nutter... the one thing I remember (other than ducking and me moving away from lampposts, was his big fiery accident.. where he ended up breaking lots of things that made up his skeleton.. "....ah well, could have been worse. I could have been dead."
Jesus......that doesn't matter....it's still the LAW.
I swear some people actually need to sustain a head injury to understand reality.
We're talking about the relevance of the law in today's society. Law progresses with society.
We no longer drown witches, have laws against homosexuality etc, maybe it's time the speed limits were looked at to see if they are still suitable.

It is constantly reviewed, and to put it into simple terms for you, while people drive like cocks, the limits will stay.
You want the limits to be increased then driver standards need to be a great deal better. Now, like all divers, I am sure you think you are something special when it comes to driving, I wonder of that was independently tested if you mouth matches your ability?
Are the French or Germans all stigs, or do they cope fine with 80mph or is it a total blood bath over there...just sayin'
just wondering if anyone here considers themselves to be a crap driver ?
I'll not be holding my breath waiting for the hand to go up

I'm free to admit I am nothing special driving wise.
So what makes you qualified to think you are safe at 70, let alone above it?
What makes you qualified to say I am not or indeed we'd not be safe at 80, 90, 100 even. Works well overseas.
And to debunk your theory about Germany & France, read the numbers.
This is in spite of the Germany having much tougher driving standards than the UK has!

Well, leaving aside your history of poor driving judgment, the speed issue, nothing. Then again, I wasn't commenting at that point on your driving, just trying to establish your qualification for making the statement about changing laws. You have answered that, you have none.
MOD EDIT: Personal insults are not necessary
So, because lots of people disobey the law, it should be changed? Seriously?!
Tell you what, let's make murder less if a crime as well whilst we're at it. I mean, lots of people ignore that law too...

They have and do that's why lower speed limits get imposed around schools. We're talking about the relevance of the law in today's society. Law progresses with society.

But where will the "petty 10mph" end? Once we have 80, others will want 90, then 100 etc. etc. etc.Look how well probibition worked in 1920's America. I'd love to see prohibition work over here, but such a petty thing as 10mph here or there is in no way comparible to legalising murder, just updating with the times and trends of the normal population

I'll ask one more time - why does the speed limit NEED to be increased?
