Hi all,
First post, so thought I would introduce myself and let you know who I am!
My name is Rob and I live in Somerset, (where I was born and bred - although I've been around a bit!). Just turned 40 this year
and I'm married, expecting our first child due next year - scary!
I'm a Civil Engineer by profession, although don't do any Engineering any more - I now Project Manage Airside Development work and an responsible for compliance and safety issues relating to aerodrome layout at a busy regional airport.
Although I've been 'snapping' for a while, mainly with my old G10, I recently upgraded to a Canon 600D and have really been bitten by the photography bug. I originally got into photography in a round about way, taking photos of my watch collection, (obsession) for a watch forum I frequent - so I have literally thousands of photos of watches on my Flickr account, but since the DSLR arrived six weeks ago I've been more out and about and learning new techniques etc and getting to grip with what the camera can do.
I have managed to pick up a used Canon 60mm Macro f/2.8 and a used Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 to upgrade from the kit lens, I shoot in Manual and RAW and 'develop' in Lightroom 5, avoiding auto settings as I feel this is the best way to learn, along with practice, practice, practice. I like to read up on technique and settings etc for different applications, but I prefer hands on trial and error - mainly error!
I have two mad Springers that ensure I get out and about and enjoy walking on the Mendip Hills with them as much as time allows.
I am certainly an enthusiastic amateur and I have a LOT to learn, I hope to be able to get involved in all the forum has to offer, but fear I will mainly be asking questions and delving into the hive mind of the forum to get as much help and advice as I can to improve my skills and knowledge - so apologies in advance if I ask some 'bone' questions and post up poor shots for critique!
I am a bit like a bull in a china shop with genre at the moment, trying my hand at any thing that tweaks my interest - I've also gone overboard on long exposures since picking up a cheap 10 stop ND filter! Here are a few of the less poor shots from the past weeks as an example of where I am:

Carn Brea monument, Cornwall, (10 stop ND Filter, 30 secs) by Rabc3, on Flickr

Tubular spray 3 by Rabc3, on Flickr

Omega Marine Chronometer by Rabc3, on Flickr

Floating guitar, (Ten Stop Filter, Long Exposure, 30 secs.) by Rabc3, on Flickr
You can see what I mean about the slightly eclectic mix of styles and techniques - I perhaps need to find a niche and concentrate on that for a bit!
Enjoy seeing you all around!
Rob
