In which case, yes, they should have run dark fibre to all the premises. We don't have any poles except streetlamps, everything is underground, no overhead cables at all

We're not actually with BT, as they are a nightmare to deal with, just one of their wholesale customers who resell BTs infrastructure, but actually with some customer service. We used to have Virgin, but the quality was rubbish, to the point I don't think I paid for it for most of running out the contract as they kept crediting my account. It is much more resilient to telegraph poles being knocked over though! From what I hear of others experiences, BT does give good service, we are on Virgin cable for broadband, which is faster than what we need, though not quite up to the very high fibre speeds, so never had the need to change.
The plan is to end all conventional landline connections by 2025 in the UK.
I'm hoping that the bit of extra time will allow some of the problems described here to be sorted out. "By 2025" is alarmingly close.I think this article by Age UK is a good explainer: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/informatio...nsumer-issues/changes-to-landline-telephones/ (it suggests it now might not be complete until the start of 2027).
