From what I hear of others experiences, BT does give good service, we are on Virgin cable for broadband, which is faster than what we need, though not quite up to the very high fibre speeds, so never had the need to change.
We're not actually with BT, as they are a nightmare to deal with, just one of their wholesale customers who resell BTs infrastructure, but actually with some customer service. We used to have Virgin, but the quality was rubbish, to the point I don't think I paid for it for most of running out the contract as they kept crediting my account. It is much more resilient to telegraph poles being knocked over though!
I'm hoping that the bit of extra time will allow some of the problems described here to be sorted out. "By 2025" is alarmingly close.
I've some relatives who live in extremely rural spots with no mobile service and very poor internet speeds (think 4 mbps shared!). They've been promised all sorts of solutions for better internet connections for years, but now at last fibre is appearing in their areas quite rapidly, strung up on poles.
Oh, wrt the person (@Sangoma ?) who mentioned no poles in their area, I've read stories of areas like that with conservation status suddenly finding engineers putting poles in for one of the novel fibre companies, triggering mass protest by residents. Apparently they can short circuit (sorry) the planning system.
I'm on FTTP on a 2 year fixed contract (youfibre 150mb + phone £23 a month)
The router provided has two phone sockets and allows for two phone numbers and uses my old phone.
Not had a single issue with the phone, but will not renew the phone contact, will just stick with mobile.
I do understand people worry about if the internet goes down, but you could get a really cheap sim and basic non smart mobile for emergencies, turned off most mobiles won't need charging for a long time, just have a scheduled charge date in your diary.
