I'm currently doing a small sub-project on 'Emotions through Music' and how they are portrayed through photography.

Anyone with any relevant techniques on how to go about it would be awesome. Any examples would also be brilliant. :D

Thanks.

Toby. :)

P.s This is for my as-level, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. + anything posted in this forum will most likely end up in my research book; As it would be evidence of discussing relevant techniques on a "photography technical site" :D

Any ideas what so ever would be very much appreciated. :D

I'm not sure I fully understand. Do you mean, for example, geting a photograph of a singer with a tear in their eye whilst singing a sad song?

Any techniques to portray some sort of emotion (with music within it, e.g someone playing, listening etc). or examples. :)

thanks

I'd have a look at the work of Ross Halfin, mostly rock bands but he's far more about the documentary side of things than just shooting from the pit, he has a huge catalogue of backstage / on the road etc stuff that is a pretty damned amazing insight into the highs and lows of the rock n roll lifestyle... I'd focus on the emotions of the musicians themselves, the highs, the lows etc as simple crowd shots would be a bit too obvious??

Thanks for the info carl. I'll have a look into him! I did a small case study on Kurt Cobain, and his emotions, as he had several illnesses, and was an awesome guitarist. -- it also linked on to REM, everybody hurts, because after his death it was discovered he listened to alot.

No probs, Johnny Cash is another VERY interesting subject, an amazing life story and his cover of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt", when taken in context with the video etc has been known to move me to tears, beautiful song and very poignant piece when you realise that his wife (featured in the video) died shortly afterwards Link to wiki entry

The 'Psychedelic' music scene might be a good area for this topic.

It obviously links to emotion and is very visual.

It not photography, but Sinead O'Conners video for nothing compares to you is pretty emotional. There is a moment when she starts crying in it, i watched a thing about that video and they said that she wasn't meant to cry, she was just so moved and in the moment that she started crying. A still of that moment looks very emotional. But like i say its not a photo, so i dont know if this is any help.

also you could look at tribes from around the world and their music. It very emotional as all their music has a purpose (greeting someone to their land, becoming a man, praising gods etc) and is coupled with dancing. Slightly different take on it than just looking at modern popular music could be quite interesting. There must be loads of photos documenting it aswell i would have thought. Just an idea

Thanks for all the very good tips/hints guys... This will all be very useful towards the exam. :)

Hi Toby, I dont know if this is any use to you but I have an ongoing project based on letting people listen to their favorite, least favorite, loud, etc piece of music and photographing their expressions. A lot of emotional expressions can be captured through playing people music.
