Ive made a dial-up connection on orangehome internet for some friends but we keep being asked for the password over and over again in Outlook Express, saying it is the wrong password.
The password is correct as they are on the internet fine.

When I came home, I made a new account in my outlook express with their orangehome settings and it worked perfectly... sent and received emails.... until I closed outlook express and then opened it again.
after that it then says the password is wrong every time.
i can log into the orange webmail with this username and password so it must be outlook express, am I right??

Any ideas why it works when i first make the account... as long as i dont close outlook express. ...after that it starts happening.

I've had this problem with NTL , Outlook wouldn't work but webmail would. I think it was a problem with the pop3 servers login procedure , I left the settings alone in Outlook and it started working properly the next day

Well I made their account on Tuesday so I came home and made an identical account in my Outlook Express which worked once...now asks each time and wont accept the password. So... 3 days!

Try googling. You'll find that a lot of people have this problem with Orange/Freeserve/Wanadoo.

Ditch Orange and get a proper ISP, would be my advice.

well i tried to put the on bt first...but the disk wouldnt finish installing ever owing to an unknown publisher certificate problem. so i gave up and did a quick orange one. what do you suggest...its only to let them see if they like the net, email etc they are in their 70's and just trying it out for size before probably getting broadband. so its only temporary really.

Provided they can get web access easily enough then I'd say e-mail is very much a secondary consideration for them at this 'testing the water' stage. The difficulty is that dial-up to broadband comparisons are like zimmer frame to Rolls Royce; i'm nore sure they'll get a real appreciation unless they dive in for broadband access.......?

Just a thought - did the couple try to access or have access to the pop3 server whilst you were tryig to log in seperately? pop3 cant handle two server access requests on the same account.

No,... i did think of that...but they dont know how to work email yet!!:D
it was happening at their house too...thats why i told them to leave it with me and i did it at home.
it seems strange that if i delete the account in OE., make it new then immediately send/receive it works fine...sends test emails out and receives test emails in.
once i shut OE then open again this problem starts...... does this sound like orange or an OE prob?

My money is on OE - i got so fed up with it that i bought outlook 03!!!

My version of OE never seemed stable and crashed losing all my contacts :(. '03 was £99 a couple of years ago and i hear it's virtually free now.

I'd guess that the directory that stores passwords is failing, so on start-up the actual log in password is lost or being replaced with blanks. This would go some way to explaining why, when you re-enter the password, it works. Not being a techie its tough to call

it doesnt work when i re-enter the password! :| the password space is filled in and it says its the wrong one...however many times i delete it and refill it and try sending/receiving again it still does it.

mind you if it does it at both houses god knows what it is. it lets them onto the internet with that password though and into webmail on the orange site so the password we are using is correct. oh well...worry not Johnny....I will beaver away till I sort it! (did I really use that word!! :D

SHOCKING!!!!!!

Good luck (with orange and the responses you're going to get ;) )

I've had this problem - got it with both Plus Net and now Orange.

There is a million and one things about it on the web heres one that comes up quite often.

try another client just to rule software out.

Thunderbird is usually very reliable

in the account settings try ticking the box to say my server requires authentication.

Try filling in the info below and add it to your registry

I get this every now and again and it usually sorts itself eventually, although sometimes a reboot seems to fix it.
