Elmley is a great spot and I go there often. You have a long drive down a track to the reserve (once you've gone through the pay point) and its about a mile and a half long. In the spring it's absolutely amazing! It's like a bird safari park with plenty to offer. Last time I went was two weeks ago but, on the track, we saw lots of different species. Once you get to the car park, you have the cafe and a pond where the Long-Eared Owl is currently hanging about. The general public park in this car park and then make their way to the hides. The first hide is about a 20 minute walk or, if you have a blue badge, you can drive to the first hide. There are another couple of hides about 10 minutes walk to each from this first hide. There is another hide right at the end of the reserve, overlooking the estuary, but I've been told its a good 30-40 minutes walk from the first hide. I'll do it one day.
Tbh though, at least in spring, you can spend hours on the track coming in to the reserve, as you can pull over and use your car as a hide. Never fail to see Hares, Marsh Harrier, Lapwing, Heron, Little Egret and Kestrel. I had a Cattle Egret there last visit and Peregrine. Won't be long before the Short Eared Owls are there, they may already be there. There are also resident Little Owls but didn't see them last time.
Well worth a visit but you have to book in advance via their website.
