Elinchrom vs Bowens vs ???

Hi guys, first post here, so hoping someone is able to help me out with some info about flash heads, monoblocks, travelpacks etc...

I need to get some flash-heads, but after reading a few things on the web generally, I'm not so sure now about what is going to fit my needs...

I was initially thinking Elinchrom and came across the new BXRi 500 heads which are meant to be really rather good.... but.... they can't be connected to a battery pack for location use as they are AC only, so unfortunately, that's them out of the window.

Then I came across the Elinchrom Style RX 600's which are pricey but they can be used with an Elinchrom Ranger RX battery pack... which is even pricier...!!

Then a 3rd thought was to have a look at the much cheaper, but no doubt just as useful on location, Bowens Esprit. But from some assisting I have done in the past, I know that the modeling light can't be used when using with a battery pack.

I'm very curious to know what people's thoughts are with the Elinchrom Style heads, and if you can use a modeling light on these when connected to a battery pack, or if you have any other manufacturers that might be of interest...

It doesn't matter which mains powered flash you use, if you run it off of a battery + inverter you will get very few flashes to a charge.

And, even if it does work with the modelling lamp switched on, the extra drain imposed by say 250w of continuous light will drop the capacity like a lead balloon. Forget the hype, the reality is that if you're running any kind of mains powered studio flash head from a battery then the modelling lamp will not, in practical terms, be usable.

And if you buy a dedicated battery powered studio flash, whether Elinchrom, Lencarta Safari, Bowens or anything else, it will either not have a modelling lamp or will have one that's simply too weak to be of much use.

I know it's a bit different price wise and I'm sure Garry is talking about the lower end of the battery pack strobes but my Profoto pack has a 250w modeling light, bangs out 1200w and I got over 550 cycles out of it t'other day without even nearly draining it. The pro-heads (and ringflash etc) can be used with both the battery packs and the mains studio packs. If your prepared to spend a bit more it is absolutely brilliant gear Linky

You're right, the Profoto is an exception. but you could almost buy your very own power station for the price:)

Although not once you have spent several days grinding the last of the willpower out of the guys at Calumet until they virtually give you the gear to get you out of the shop :D
 
Can you come up here and work on Calumet in Manchester? I love 'em to bits but I'd need a LOT of help to get profoto out of them for less than a kidney!!

In truth I'm really just saying that to make myself feel better, I think I still paid a large part of their wages for the year ;)

There's something about Calumet that makes me think I have much more money than I actually have, but I still love em for it.
 
Holy crap, I worked with this Profoto kit a few years back doing a job with someone else's kit, and I had no idea how expensive it was...

It is lovely kit though, the feel and build is exquisite !!

Can't see that being my first setup though :lol:

One of the staff at Calumet loves the profoto gear and uses the shop demo stuff for her own work, I just need to figure out how to kidnap her! (Sorry Layla :)) mwahhhhhaaa

I find rocks bricks and chloroform work well
