Hi Simon,

My mate who assists me quite a lot has one, we've used a couple of the A heads a fair few times now, it's pretty damn small and extremely lightweight, everything fits into the supplied suit case and it's very quick to set up.

The power output can also be changed via skyports too which I thought was very neat.

Only gripes were the diffuser attachment which is extremely restrictive, your limited to buying only Elinchrom modifiers which IMO are astronomical in price.

Also the output is very tight if your thinking of shooting in bright sun light.

If you want some more power and willing to spend more cash, then I can seriously recommend the Profoto AcuteB set as an alternative.

Thanks Thomas ..... you just had to bring up the Profoto AcuteB

That was the other system I was looking at as it seems to be the next smallest / portable.

Do you use the radio or non radio one - and if you do use the radio - does it work OK without PW's ... but using other triggers

:naughty: The quadra is a slice more portable but it's marginal, I needed more power and tbh I'd rather invest in Profoto than Elinchrom personally.

I have the 600R, it works fine with my existing PW's, just turn everything on and then press the test button on on any wizard until it syncs and fires the AcuteB.

Both will do the job but you have more punch with the Acute

I could be wrong here (I have the 7b without the radio) but I think as Profoto own PW the built in radio only learns PW's or Profoto's own brand transmitters. As I say I could be wrong but I do remember hearing this somewhere.

Radio aside you really will love anything you buy from Profoto, expensive but lovely in every way. :)

i was going to go to profoto, but decided to go with Hensel Porty 12 Lithium, check it out its really small and far as i know the only one to use lithium battery.. very lightweight, 1200 ws, 450 flashes, built in radio trigger with power adjust, recycle in under 2 seconds, working modeling light etc..

Thanks Guys .... I had "briefly" looked at the Porty Lithium ... then saw the price

The AcuteB is nearer what I was wanting to spend to end

Decisions decisions

Another vote here for the 600R. It just works and works well.
Mart

One thing to check out is Asymmetrical adjustments on the battery pack, 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 ratios are possible over the two heads on hensel porty lith....

That is an issue unless I decide I need to go separate packs per head due to the distances I work at ... having daisy chained cables seems to defeat the object of the pack idea.

But most times outdoors it will be single light / reflector for speed - and indoors the distance issue becomes mute...

Mmmm too many choices

I know i keep raving on about hensel , but its another reason they are great for the cables, the cables unscrew from the head end as well, so can store away neatly, but you can also buy different lenth cables:), so could get a massive 20 metre cable etc..

Porty 12 Lithium 1200 AS/RC KIT £2399.00
Porty 6 Lithium 600 AS/RC KIT £2245.00

ouch

DOes anyone know if the air system works with the acuteB to regulate power from the camera transmitter ....

And does the Hensel trigger allow remote power adjustment

The Elinchrom skyports do .... which is a big plus in their favour

hensel allows remote power adjustment, 1/10th of a stop adjustments, and you can switch on and off the modeling light from the trigger , as well as test fire..

b****r :D

lol is there any way this thread can be locked to stop just me from reading it?

I was in Calumet today and almost got dragged away from the profoto before I started licking it!

Simon, I'm currently in a similar situation as you, and struggling to come to a decision. I need more power so I'm selling my Quadra kit.

Have you mad a purchase yet, what did you get?

No

I looked at various offerings at Focus and either didn't like the build quality or the packs were MASSIVE (bowens)

Cost can be ridiculous as well ...

I'm half thinking Bowens travelpack with 250 / 500r lights - but this becomes big to handle

The best system for size of lights / pack seems to the the profoto acute B 600

The heads are a better size than the other systems on offer - the pack is well made and finished ....

I had my mind set on the Bowens set up with Travelpak then when I saw the size of the head at focus, I changed my mind. Also check out the recycle time, 5secs for the 500 head. I'm fairly certain I'm now going with Ranger RX. I ultimately need two packs for total control, but could get away with one and two heads for a start.

I did like the Profoto, but jeez... the price! Still tempted by two acute 600's though. They come with free head at the moment. My only concern is lack of power in the summer months.

The size of the ranger heads put me off .....

Simon,

I bought 2 Quadras at Focus.
We can have a play at the workshop in April!?

M.

Wicked ! I'll be interested how you get on with them in terms of build quality and power

It's smaller than a Bowens monolite though

The build quality of the Quadra is excellent, and I sell it with a heavy heart, but it could do with a bit more ooomph for my work.

LOL - you are trying to tempt me ! :nono:

Be tempted! If 400W/S is what you need it's a great piece of kit and the heads are tiny. The LED modeling light is awesome for video as well...

Profoto is the best choice if your budget will stand it, but take a look at the Lencarta Safari. Good price, good build quality and of course it's S-fit so you won't be lumbered with buying overpriced accessories.
In addition, it has 600Ws of power, which is enough to overwhelm the sun at any reasonable distance. The Quadra is only 400Ws and as the power is 2/3rds - 1/3rd in real terms you only get 268Ws...

Cheers GAry ..... I looked at the Safari at Focus and wish the pack was better encased / protected .... The heads seemed quite big as well

I do realise everything is a compromise though

Profoto have just released a new AcuteB pack with lithium battery

Just got my self and 'Explorer XT' from the Flash Centre. Only had chance to have a couple of plays with it this week but I am over the moon with it. It's a pack you can plug in your existing studion flash units into and they work just as if they a plugged into the socket in the wall. It also a far cheaper option. I have to say though I have used the Quadras and they are a fantastic piece of kit and worth every penny. The ranger kit is not as portable but the power is fantastic.

For most stuff in this country where the sun is not bright for most of the time, if I had the money the quadra kit is what I would go for.

£300 dearer and no free head.... very light and more flashes per charge though.

Profoto is so tempting, but I'm convinced your paying more for kudos than product.

Yes - but will they clear out the old at reduced prices ... as the new battery is backward compatible

I'd looked at this - but it starts to get a bit cumbersome on shoots where you need to work quickly.

Garry, if you just use 1 head you get the full 400Ws out of it.

I really looked at the profoto when I got my quadra but the lack of remote power adjustment really killed it for me. That and the Elinchrom mods like the deep octa are awesome. I know JoeyL who uses profoto flashes still goes to Elinchrom for his mods.

The specs on the acuteb 600 say from 9-600 w/s and you can use the air remote system

Am I missing something obvious ?

The one I looked at allowed you to use the air remote to trigger it but not adjust the power. The power was adjusted by a physical dial you had to go up to the pack and turn. Have they changed that now??
